๐Ÿ‘‹ Hi there! Anyone coming to WordCamp Malaysia tomorrow?
mayukojpn 3mo
Yes!
Hi! I'm visiting kuala lumpur in early December for a couple of weeks. Would love to know if there is any coworking space or cafees where tech people hang around. Im in the algo trading space (crypto)
jmestn 3mo
anyone filing taxes in Malaysia and have a recommendation for an accountant?
Does anyone know of a place selling Music Tech in Malaysia?
allgo 3mo
Does anyone know ANOTHER eSIM provider with a Malaysian phone number that doesn't require your passport?
ronald 3mo
Also easily bought from Lazada that way without touching a card, all via T&G.

Hey, I'm currently in Penang (George Town). The vibe is very nice and I'm thinking to stay a bit longer (originally planned only a few days). Has anyone been here and do you have any spots (cafes, coworking, cool tech spaces, art stuff) that you'd recommend?
I will be in KL next week. Anyone for a coffee? โ˜•๏ธ
Anyone in Georgetown now? Are there any meetups here?
Any suggestions for what area to stay in KL? I hear traffic is bad so I guess I should be near a train station. Other than that it would be nice to be within walking distance to coffee / food etc
mayukojpn 2mo
Hi Hunter! I'm hosting coliving here. If you don't care about sharing bathrooms our location is ๐Ÿ’ฏ. We are located in the center of Bukit Bintang. You can walk to most of popular places. https://www.instagram.com/kl.coliving

Other options I personally recommend KLCC for condos or Chinatown area for hostels.
Hey thanks for the suggestions. I'm more of an Airbnb person tbh, so I'll check out KLCC. Nice coliving spot though!

Has anyone experienced any issues receiving SMS codes on non Malaysian phone numbers in Malaysia?

Hello everyone! I am going to Kuala Lumpur for a week (27 Jan โ€” 3 Feb), would love to meet for a coffee or a lunch ๐Ÿ˜‰
Yes. Sometimes it arrives a day later, other times not at all. :S Sucks when that's your 2F.
Bukit Bintang. Much better than KLCC.
I'm here.
I'll be here but be prepared because afaik that's Chinese new year and things might be closed.
oskars 1mo
Yeah, Indian and Malay stores will be open, though.

paul040 1mo
Or any actually worthwhile clubs/locations in general?
Would You recommend to work from cafes or coworking hubs in Kuala Lumpur and which ones? I will stay in Bukit Bintang area
newyam 28d
If stay longer, Common Ground Bukit Bintang is nice
Cheers! I've been looking into it actually and by now it's my first choice. But not staying for that long though
mayukojpn 28d
Hi, do you want to try WeWork EQ? I can invite guests before noon today.
newyam 28d
They have a nice rooftop, area, 7-11 on Ground Floor and a foodhall on the opposite side of the street. Close to Pavilion and KLCC
Hey! Not today - still doing some research for my trip in March . But thanks ๐Ÿ™
apalevich 27d
How often will you be there? I would love to join you, but I arrive on Monday
Hiii just flying in tomorrow to KL, probably will be mainly working and maybe go to some party

โ˜๏ธ I'll update my location - we want to go to local food stand at 9 PM but we can't reserve table.

I sent DM to all attendees but pryhttgrjbqh ๐Ÿฅน reached to the daily limit. Feel free to ping me if you lost.
sorry, does it mean I am included or not :D

chgkxun yes! thank you for the follow up ๐Ÿฅฐ
Hey travel gurus, I need your wisdom! ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™‚๏ธ Iโ€™m looking for a long-term stay in Malaysia from February to the end of March. KL seems cool, but my wallet prefers โ€˜affordable but awesomeโ€™ places. Any hidden gems or should I just move into a 7-Eleven?
I've been living super cheap in a small apartment in The Riv jj Riveria City, like 25 usd per day. There is a co-working place at the building, nice rooftop pool and a small gym. Apartment is nothing too crazy but at least it's super cheap
Looks nice, thanks!
allgo 22d
Question for those coming to Malaysia, or in Malaysia:

When did you become aware of the mat rempits?
allgo 22d
What does "affordable" mean?

Quill Residences has 1BD comfortable apartments on Airbnb for max $1200/mo, and has a great gym (with Smith machine) that's almost always empty during the afternoon. Has a pool too, and sauna. Is that "awesome", or are you looking for natural beauty kind of awesome...?
I'am looking more into $600/mo +- I'm currently not working.
oskars 22d
Penang can suit you, prices are cheaper than in KL or Johor, even though 600 USD will be challenging to find if you plan to get a contract shorter than 12 months.
mayukojpn 22d
I'm staying at Digital Nomad House. It's not a typical condo but a coliving in a traditional low-rise building. We focus on the digital nomad community. All rooms are below 600 USD. No pool/gym but the location is perfect.
Anything interesting happening during Chinese New Year in KL? I missed the meetup ๐Ÿ™
mayukojpn 22d
Of course! We can meet anytime โ˜บ๏ธ More digital nomads are arriving in KL
allgo 20d
Airbnb has decent apartments in KL for about $220/week.

Port Dickson is even cheaper and much quieter than KLCC with the fucking mat rempits
mayukojpn 18d
Morning! I'll have Nasi Lemak lunch with friends at Capitol Cafe in Bukit Bintang. Let me know if you want to join โ˜บ๏ธ
Has anyone experienced whether Touch and Go QR codes work with Apple Pay and Wise, or is a specific app required? I currently donโ€™t have a physical card as mine was damaged in Vietnam. Thanks!
oskars 17d
You can top TnG up with Wise if that was your question
My issue is I currently cannot even download and/ or register for this app. Is this only possible from within malaysia with an specific mobile number?
oskars 17d
I'm not sure about location but you definetely need a Malaysian simcard for it.
oskars 17d
Oh, I got you, you didn't mean TnG app at first, you wanted to pay through QR codes using Apple Pay. For these codes, you need a TnG app, Alipay (this isn't standard, won't work everywhere) or anything else supporting DuitNow (local banks do). You can open TnG account with Malaysian phone number, they'd require a fast KYC but they don't mind foreign tourists. TnG has internal account which you can top up with Wise.

So technically you can pay with QR without a plastic card.
ccooper 17d
Yea I have TnG setup up, you just wise money to the account. In theory you can also Wise to any DuitNow account but that'd be fairly tedious day to day.
oskars 17d
dsxbowqnzmpzdjppkf that's probably what you need.
nothing 17d
How bad are the floods now in East Malaysia? I was planning a trip to Kota Kinabalu on March 10th โ€ฆ seems like potentially a terrible idea now
do you guys think I should pay the visa extension and stay a third month in phuket or go to kuala lumpur?
it seems kuala lumpur (malaysia) has like 20 days of rain per month, in any month of the year lol ?
the flight would cost about the same of prolonging the visa
oskars 12d
It doesn't have that many raining days and anyway you wouldn't walk much in cities near equator. I recommend going to KL if you've never been there.
So zoeovmv I can imagine you've been there
Was it often cloudy and/or raining? Also in almost every picture I saw on airbnbs etc, on google maps street view, and in picture made by people, I always saw clouds

And btw why you say I wouldn't walk much in cities around the equator? Can't one change place and go where there is not much rain/clouds? For example, now I'm in phuket and the weather is amazing (for me): always sunny, almost never rains. I'm okay with a few days of rain, but given that Kuala Lumpur (for what I heard) seems to not be a place where there is much to do, I was thinking about it

I'm open to opinions btw of people that went there, so if this is you I'd appreciate your point of view

p.s. I just don't want to repeat the experience I had in bangkok going in october where it was almost always raining and cloudy, I want to be more careful about looking at the weather before going
oskars 11d
No, I didn't notice KL being rainier than Bangkok or any other city in SEAsia. It depends on the season but even rainy seasons don't mean pouring whole day. I'm in Jakarta now which must be in a peak of rainy seasonโ€”I'm giving up bringing a jacket with me because I didn't need it last week.

As for walking, these cities have +30 C temperature and sun burning the skin to the cancer. Most of the day locals spend in the office (with AC) or on the road (with AC). This is why I'm saying you won't be out much.
There has been barely any rain in the past 2 weeks in KL
allgo 11d
Has anyone (accidentally) overstayed their visa? How much was the penalty?
allgo 11d
I've been living in KL for ~3 months. It's been cloudy I'd say 70% of the days. Less cloudy over the past 2 weeks.
oskars 11d
I did once for a day, got a big red stamp, had questions from Thailand (they recognise this stamp) and Malaysia on my next visit. I consider it as my biggest visa blunder in SEAsia.
oskars 11d
I believe a few day (1 or 2) overstay isn't a problem, you won't pay anything but I won't recommend risking if you plan coming back.
Hey guys whatโ€™s the best option for ESIM here? Iโ€™m in the airport and it looks like they only offer physical SIM cards. Should I try and find something in the City, or just download Airlo or some ESIM app?
Dont use Airalo it's too expensive. Just buy an esim in a store.
mh okay but for example if I have 20th March wrritten on my passport as exit date, can I leave on 20th March or should I leave on 19th March (at least)
oskars 10d
Ehh, I don't have exit dates on a stamp when I enter Malaysia, they only write an entrance date and number of days I can spend in the country (30 days for me). This means I have to leave in 30 days INCLUDING entrance and exit date.
for those like me who have an e-passport page, it's even worse. I don't have any stamp. I assume the stay is still 3 months (as it was 3 months stamp even if you asked for a weekend to the agent) but I can't be sure. I filled the MDAC arrival cars telling them I was planning to stay 1 month but what if I want to stay longer ? I'm actually planning a trip to Singapore just to be safe
Your maximum stay is determined not by a stamp or MDAC, but by your passport
oskars 9d
Just for noting somewhere, once I got a stamp for 7 days instead of 30 in Malaysia because I had bad history.
Very interesseted to meet some nomads in KL, are you okay for planning a meetup ?
I'll be in KL from 15-19, I'm down
