why do you think this? and which city?
jamwil 3mo
Hey everyone, Iโ€™ll be in the DR over Christmas! Two questionsโ€”is there a local WhatsApp group or similar for DR travellers/expats? And does anyone know of a reliable driver in the Punta Cana area? Thanks!
Punta cana has Uber or u mean longer distance? I'm on a Caribe Tours bus right now it's the best way to travel between cities
jamwil 3mo
Hey, thanks for the response. Ya, longer distanceโ€ฆ airport to Bayahibe/Dominicus
adrianlin 3mo
Hi, I'm probably coming to the DR soon. I'm curious though if anyone's done one of the tours to Cap Haitien in Haiti, which is supposed to be still safe. There's a few tours i've seen, and I'm just wondering if their existence, as well as blogposts about people doing tours there, means Cap Haitien really is safe

Iโ€™m heading to cabarete in January, very excited

https://creators.yahoo.com/lifestyle/story/why-you-should-never-take-an-uber-in-the-dominican-republic-142415640.html

I heard about Uber Scams in the Dominican Republic like this one. I heard it's advisable to avoid ubers at all costs. Dunno if there are any other taxi/car-share options in Santo Domingo though
I take Uber daily, that lady is cray
I only heard of tourists getting robbed in taxis not ubers
Take a guagua short distances but they only drive daytime (50-100 pesos), private transport (expensive but comfy and anytime, must arrange in advance), caribe tours between cities(best and super cheap but last bus around 4pm), Uber always in the major cities or just rent a car for $600 USD per month or $1k for a nice SUV. I own my own car now but I still take Uber in Santo Domingo or punta cana.
adrianlin 2mo
Oh ok, thanks, what about public transportation? is that not great in santo domingo?
I've never taken it, it only goes one way last I checked
One line
I'm flying into Santo Domingo tomorrow and taking private transport to Nagua area (2 hrs north) for $170 usd. Sometimes I pay $200 usd for the same trip depends which driver is available. A big van because I'm with my family and have a lot of luggage. We would normally take Caribe Tours bus but unfortunately we arrive 6pm, 2 hrs after the last bus. Caribe Tours costs ~$8 for the same trip plus $13 Uber Ride from SDQ to Caribe Tours.

Just leaving this as an example because people have asked how to get from south to north coast before.

Hey all! Has anyone here done any kite surfing in the DR? Iโ€™m thinking about checking out Buen Hombre if anyone has been would love to pick your brain
Cabarete 100%

I grew up there so I'm biased but it's called Kite Surf paradise for a reason.

you have the main beach in cabarete which has good wind conditions (choppy water though) and then a reef about 5min from the beach with great waves/conditions for wave riding or jumping

Then if you want more flat conditions you can go to La Boca which is a 10m taxi ride from Cabarete, it's a river with flat conditions and good wind.

Buen Hombre is in the middle of nowhere, you'll have good kitesurfing, but Cabarete is a lot better in terms of restaurants/infrastructure
can also do good downwinds from Cabarete to Encuentro during sunset which is really nice
Cabarete is good. Just spent a month there. Now in Las Terrenas for a bit.
I go to Terrenas weekends for surfing

Maybe I'll be there this weekend
sajustine 2mo
Thanks guys! oswuixfnbgw I hear you on the infrastructure thing! My grandma lives near buen hombre thatโ€™s sort of why Iโ€™m leaning towards it. In any case Iโ€™ll let you guys know where I end up in case anyoneโ€™s around
National holiday today, happy Nuestra Seรฑora de la Altagracia day!
rcsligar 1mo
If anyone is in las Terrenas let me know if youโ€™d like to meet up for coffee, so far it seems to be mostly retired expats Iโ€™ve met here
I always see non retired expats here https://maps.app.goo.gl/KNJL1KdUHKi6WCdw5
naanman 1mo
How are you getting around over there, uber?
rcsligar 1mo
Unfortunately uber doesnโ€™t work here and I havenโ€™t rented a moto so usually I use a guy for mototaxi ๐Ÿ˜†
zacarias 1mo
Wow
zacarias 1mo
Anyone in Santo Domingo
rcsligar 1mo
Havenโ€™t been yet but Iโ€™m curious how it is Iโ€™ve heard mixed things
zacarias 1mo
Depends on what youโ€™re looking for

I need to get to the country asap. I want to meet real people living on the land. Cities seem to have a consistent theme in the west
rcsligar 1mo
I imagine Santo Domingo would be better for social life, although some have told me itโ€™s uncomfortably chaotic and dirty. Generally I like Las Terrenas although would like to have some city activities every once in awhile, so Iโ€™ll probably visit
How many pesos is that in Terrenas? Under 100 I hope
I'm there sometimes
Good food, good bars, skip the loud clubs, if I'm there on Wednesdays I go to the Irish pub it's packed
Don't take Motoconcho ever in Santo Domingo, only Uber. And be careful at night there's many car accidents
My friends take Motoconcho but I see fatal accidents every time so it's not worth for me
Normally I drive my own car or take Uber
rcsligar 1mo
I donโ€™t use it often since I mostly just use Komida for anything but they usually charge me at least 300 ๐Ÿ˜–
Wow I think that's the tourist price
Ask what a local pays then next time u can know if they're overcharging
It's definitely going to cost more than my small town but I think 300 is probably more than normal in Terrenas
Here it's 50 pesos
ChatGPT says, Typical Motoconcho (moto-taxi) fares in Las Terrenas
Short rides within town: about RD$50โ€“RD$75 (โ‰ˆ US $1โ€“$1.50) during the day. ๏ฟฝ

rcsligar 1mo
Yea I got nailed good thing I only used it a couple of times ๐Ÿ˜…
rcsligar 1mo
I need to rent something Iโ€™m just not comfortable with how people drive here lol
naanman 1mo
They drive crazy
Part of learning, u just have to negotiate before taking the ride
Terrenas is probably flooded this week?
rcsligar 1mo
Yesterday was raining all day this morning just cloudy more rain coming tomorrow
But Terrenas always floods they have horrible drainage
I'll be in Santo Domingo this Thursday and Fri
rcsligar 29d
I thought of going there the weekend of the 13th when a friend is going
rcsligar 29d
I would like to check it out
klowa32 29d
If you learn to drive in DR, you can drive pretty anywhere in the world lol
Whatโ€™s the best way to get from las Terrenas to Santo Domingo? I need to get there next Sunday
Always Caribe Tours bus
Does that depart here in town or taxi to Sanchez and take it from there?
Take a guagua there to Sanchez or use the other bus company from here https://maps.app.goo.gl/7WgqJmKQpL4pc3h18
Anyone in Las Terrenas please share videos of the flooding!
Is it rainny season?
Hope that's not your place?
This is near me, but most places here aren't affected because it's high ground
It is, horrible, whole backpack soaked, expensive headphones and computer charger ruined
Damn, that sucks ๐Ÿ˜ฉ
Yea that sucks ๐Ÿฅด u know about domex? Best way to get Amazon packages
Thanks for that suggestion I will need to reorder some stuff ๐Ÿ˜–
