Random question: I’m considering getting a second passport mainly for diversification, not for travel.

Given my nationality/lifestyle and how cheap they are, Panama (~5 years) and Paraguay (~3 years) seem like the most interesting options. The main thing for me is that I don’t want to significantly change my lifestyle or spend most of the year in one country. Ideally I’d maintain the residence properly, keep whatever local ties/assets are needed, visit a few times a year, and still be free to travel.

I’d consider citizenship-by-investment too if some cheap-as-fuck opportunity came up 😅, but I’m generally not interested in spending hundreds of thousands just for another passport as mine is already very strong (EU)

Has anyone here:
- actually obtained citizenship after ~3 years in Paraguay or ~5 years in Panama?
- done it while spending relatively little time there?
- found any other low-cost, low-physical-presence routes worth considering?

Also curious whether you think pursuing a second passport purely for long-term diversification is actually worthwhile.

The CIP programs in the Caribbean are unbeatable, usually the entry level tiers are "donations", but at a slightly higher tier / willing to lock up ~300-500k of capital in a real estate purchase gets you the passport too

You mentioned you don't want to pay a few hundred k, but you're willing to maintain a residence there - this is how you'd structure it - purchase real estate and hold the property, which I think ties in neatly with what you already stated you were willing to do

Yeah, I already have Panama actually. Italy has a special treaty/relationship with Panama, so for Italians the route is even easier than the Friendly Nations visa.

All-in, the residency process cost me around €3.5k + two flights. I became a permanent resident on January 14, 2026, and in theory I should be eligible to apply for naturalization 5 years from that date.

What I’m mainly trying to understand now is how probable citizenship actually is in practice after those 5 years, especially if I maintain the residency/ties properly but don’t spend most of the year there.

On the Caribbean CIPs, I get your point. I’m just not a huge fan of real estate as an investment in general, especially in countries far away from where I actually live. I’d rather keep most of my capital in liquid investments than lock $300–500k into a property I probably wouldn’t otherwise buy, especially if the CIP-approved real estate is somewhat overpriced to begin with.

That said, I really like the general idea of doing some annoying legal/admin bullshit early in life and potentially collecting the benefits 5–10 years later but i'm open to new ideas!
