A friend went through it, it’s super cumbersome and bureaucratic, even if you speak Chinese and have a local to help you. They could really stimulate a lot of economic activity and brain gain if they cut all the red tape and made a new company type / regulated from scratch.

I want to relocate to Taiwan because me and my Taiwanese gf have a child and we want her to experience life there for a while. We currently live in The Netherlands and my company is registered there. I’m working on a SaaS for non profits and have some freelance side hustles (e.g. fractional CTO). Due to visa and tax reasons it made sense to register a company in Taiwan.

I did this a few years ago (branch office, 分公司）. It is fine if you neuroflex and have good CPA. Chinese helps too.

Banks are a PITA though but yeah

They have this requirement to avoid paper companies and tax evasion. (Partially from USA pressure IIRC). It is solvable with a good CPA and for a fee.

Nah I don’t live in Taiwan, I’ve just visited a bit, have a mate there. Great food, safe, traditional elements of Chinese culture, mountains etc. 🇹🇼 ❤️

While incorporating a company Taiwan in Taiwan wouldn’t be a requirement for me to live there, I might not be able to keep my current company registration in NL and if I would I will have to pay taxes there

Have you considered Singapore or somewhere easier to operate from, if the main reason for incorporating isn’t to get a visa?

I guess the real reason he wants to incorporate in Taiwan is to not pay double taxes. Singaporean company won't solve double taxation and will even increase problems (e.g. Singapore needs at least one residence to operate accounting).

One thing to keep in mind is the income tax in Taiwan is relatively low if you're a say more to moderate US earner (say like $50-100k), the health care premiums can rather expensive, especially if you have your own company as from my understanding, then you pay 100% of it. When you're an employee it's 30%, company pays 60%, and 10% gov pays.

And you pay for each person in your household

I thought about starting a company but I believe I've found the best option is a US S-corp (as an American), decent income as an employee, and paying the 15% social security in the US, income tax on the salary in Taiwan, and anything extra as distributions from the S-corp, which actually fall into the foreign earned income and would be classified under the alternative minimum tax AMT which for Taiwan is not taxed until over 7.5 million NTD

I'm in Japan now traveling around, and I keep thinking back to last year and how much better the food was in Taiwan. I thought Japanese food was so highly regarded, but I miss night markets so much!! And the mochi here is TERRIBLE. I tried at a bunch of different shops and then gave up
