Iโ€™m a bit concerned about the internet connection in Dahab. I have a few video calls to make during the day for work, and I need to ensure they go smoothly. How is the Wi-Fi generally, and is there good 4G phone coverage for a hostpot?

I saw that El Coworking space has a reliable internet connection, but I would still prefer to work from home.
WiFi is not really reliable most of the time, especially if you have 4G WiFi router.
Usually I use my phone as a hot spot, works well with etisalat network.

This year 5G was announced in Egypt, but it is mostly 4G in Dahab as far as I know
leonardo 2mo
well as long as the phone 4G is reliable, I don't mind using that. I'll get a Etisalat simcard then
leonardo 2mo
is it easy to get a simcard for a foreigner?
Yes, just bring your passport
Oh
Do you know about registering your phone in airport?
leonardo 2mo
you mean getting a simcard at the airport?
leonardo 2mo
btw do you think Etisalat is better than Vodafone? I'm reading on reddit that most use vodafone
No
You need to register your phone IMEI at airport, or it will be blocked after 90 days

Not sure about that, have not used vodaphone here
leonardo 2mo
crazy! thanks for the heads up. I think I'll only spend 30-40 days in egypt so I guess I should be fine even without it
Well, yeah, but you phone will be blocked next time you come to Egypt
leonardo 2mo
oh okay, then I gotta do that. thanks!
Howโ€™s dahab in december? Is there an active community round that time of the year?
It depends which community are you talking about.
It's kinda cold during December-February, so here are less freedivers for example, but more windsurfers and kite surfers.
Also there kinda lots of turists during new year, but they are here just for a week or two.
Thanks for the reply! Just meant a general remote worker community
Oh, here are lots of people working remotely all year round, but everyone is doing their own thing, mostly some kind of sport.
leonardo 2mo
if I want to learn to kite, would it make more sense to me to get an accomodation close to the lagoon? or is it better to stay in dahab and go there by transportation everyday?
Fellow travellers, have you spent time in Dahab, Egypt? Iโ€™m planning a trip during Christmas and New Year with my wife and my mom. Iโ€™d love to ask you some questions if youโ€™ve been thereโ€”would really appreciate 5 mins of your time.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฌ
Its not so comfortable here in December-January
Water is cold, wind is storg, and some nights are not really comfortable
Most of the cafes, shops and other points of interest are closer to LightHouse and Assala square.
If you are planning to do only kiting and stay mostly at home or hotel - Lagoon would be fine.

Either way you can get from Lagoon to Assala relativly fast and cheap by taxi or bicycle

Anyone based in Cairo or has been?
anomad 19d
Hurghada vs Dahab?
anomad 19d
Which is better?
anomad 19d
Is El Gouna really worth it for the price?
anomad 19d
Do they have online grocery shopping with delivery which I can spend around 600โ‚ฌ to buy food for both and cook at home? We are a couple
Bro, it really depends on the context and what you want to do in your free time
anomad 19d
I want to stay in a warm place where I can swim if I want
anomad 19d
And have a gym to lose weight
anomad 19d
And then one time per week or something, go for a tour or do some activity with getyourguide
anomad 19d
We need to work etc on our little business and try to make more money etc, but I would like to do that from a good place
anomad 19d
I don't need cafe for working, but I need a decent wifi or 4g
There is no online shopping for groceries in Dahab
anomad 19d
Mh okay, but there must be a supermarket near ?
anomad 19d
We usually buy like every 2 weeks and store the food in a way that doesn't expire
anomad 19d
I thought maybe there was the delivery from sharm for the groceries
anomad 19d
We don't want to overspend like being in vacation. And we will stay there ideally 3-6 months (if needed we go outside one time and come back, if possible, doing another 90 day visa)
anomad 19d
I was thinking something like this
Yeah, there are shops and small supermarketโ€™s, but the variety of options is not like in big cities.
You can create healthy meals with chicken, lamb, eggs, vegetables etc
Itโ€™s a 90 minute drive from Sharm to Dahab, so no ๐Ÿ˜…
In October I have spent around 500$ for cafes and 200$ for groceries
I mostly eat at cafes and buy a lot of soda drinks
anomad 19d
If I eat at cafes I'll die
anomad 19d
lol
lol, why ?
There are a lot of good places in Dahab with nice and healthy food options
anomad 19d
Usually in the morning we eat pancakes here in italy made with almonds flour , yeast, milk, eggs. Then a little square of 90% dark chocolate melted + coconut flour . And a glass of milk. That's healthy breakfast for us. I think it should be doable also there? Maybe they won't have the yeast as we call it in italy, or maybe the chocolate won't be clean or they don't have "normal" coconut flour? Idk, in thailand for example it was difficult to find food without chemicals compared to italy , we only stayed in south east asia outside of italy, so we don't know much of the food around the world

Then we usually eat a bit of meat either red or chicken, fruit like apples/pears/bananas , and some vegetable mixed either in soups or as a side dish . I think we could find something like this in egypt? Maybe the red meat is more difficult? Maybe the food won't have the same quality but I never expect to find italian food quality anyway
anomad 19d
In general eating out is not healthy as cooking at home, I think
anomad 19d
But i don't know about dahab, I'm talking about thailand for example or vietnam etc
In general, if food contains unwanted added sugars or chemicals, for me is not healthy, and it's difficult I think that cafes will care much about it specially at a cheap price ?
anomad 19d
It depends i think, for example in thailand when asking for a juice, I always wanted to see it done from the fruit in front of me, otherwise many times they were just fake industrial juices made from things with preservatives, chemicals, fake sugar etc
leonardo 19d
Dahab then
anomad 19d
Isn't hurghada also a place where to swim etc? I don't know about it
Also, a guy here talked very good about el gouna few months ago
anomad 19d
ugnpwbdwqp what made you laugh lol
Coconut flour may be hard to find here but I am not sure about it, I donโ€™t cook much at home
anomad 19d
Okay so let's see
anomad 19d
The rest seems actually not bad from the outside
Itโ€™s cow milk butter, not margarine
Itโ€™s basmati rice
anomad 19d
Doesn't seem bad
This is beef sausage and beef bacon
anomad 19d
Those are not sausages in my humble opinion ๐Ÿ˜‚
anomad 19d
they seem some kind of wurstel
leonardo 19d
it seems a bit exagerated
anomad 19d
but anyway the food from the look doesn't seem bad
Yeah
My point was there is a variety of good places to eat, hopefully you will find something to your taste
anomad 19d
you were spending how much? for 1 person or 2?
anomad 19d
what in particular
500$ for cafe and 200 for groceries (including some household stuff)
For 1 person

But keep in mind I am 110 kg dude who trains and loves to eat and drinks a lot of soda.
anomad 19d
Yeah we usually spend about 600 Euros = 694$ for groceries for both
We have a way to spend little time cooking, buying food even only 1 time every 2-3 weeks or per month (except for a few things), and then cooking it and preserving it in a way it lasts 3 times more
anomad 19d
Based on your spending it would be like the double of that .. I'd also do that if I were alone probably because I am not good at cooking ๐Ÿ˜‚ (and have no willpower to do it, my gf always cooks)
anomad 19d
ilesiwkhhfzqz did. you enjoy dahab? have you been to other parts of egypt?
anomad 19d
how much were your paying for the accomodation, bills included? did you also have a gym included or paid for it separately? what about swimming? did you go to the sea, or swimming pool or what
anomad 19d
i want to start running again and do calisthenics because with weights i always find a way to get injury
anomad 19d
i am bit too flexible or something like this, so i'm prone to getting disc injury to the back or other things like that. No problem with calisthenics instead
I like Dahab, mostly because I train Freediving here. Itโ€™s nice and affordable

I have been to Hurgada, Sharm and Cairo, but they to crowded for me, Dahab feels more like a village
anomad 19d
2 bedroom? So like, three rooms + a bathroom , of which 2 are bedrooms?
anomad 19d
i always get a little bit confused because in italy we call it mono-room (1 room + bathroom) or "bi-room" (two rooms.. usually the room for kitchen and sofa + a room for the bed + a bathroom)
anomad 19d
2 bedrooms is the italian "three-rooms" .. I think ๐Ÿ˜‚. Like .. the room with kitchen and sofa + two rooms with beds + a bathroom ?
anomad 19d
that's a good price anyway
anomad 19d
you must have found it renting directly without airbnb or booking fees? right?
There are chats in telegram and groups on Facebook
There are gyms and some roads suitable for running
leonardo 19d
watch the dogs tho ๐Ÿ˜‚
anomad 18d
taygxduamvxpa I saw a drone footage of dahab.. is it literally a beach with some broken house on it?
lol
of course not
you will have more luck with google maps in satelite mode or street view mode
anomad 18d
vnixvbsamvdwp how would you compare dahab or hurghada to thailand ?
anomad 18d
and what about el gouna? have you ever been there?
leonardo 18d
very different. thailand is all about turism, premium services at low cost. dahab is more an oasis for sports: you can dive, climb, kitesurf, winsurf, swim. If you don't do sport, then it might be boring. There are international food options in town but forget the thai standards. Communities are present but mostly hippie stuff like yoga, healing, etc. Here in general is way more chilled, it's a desert after all! and it feels more like a hidden gem. I love it.
I agree with Leonardo
paul040 17d
And then... They leave you alone? ๐Ÿ˜
leonardo 17d
some barks at you, but if you slow down and talk to them then they calm down. for sure not a place to practice fast sprints
paul040 17d
Always carry a supply of steaks to distract them
is VPN a big issue in egypt? can u get in trouble with the authorities for using it?
leonardo 16d
I don't think anyone care
gadix1980 12d
This is not fake butter, it is one of the good companies, Almarai, you can trust thier products
gadix1980 12d
No, not an issue
gadix1980 12d
100% fake and unhealthy
Saw this at the main grocery store in Dahab today
Your bigger problem is not the authorities, but the non-functioning VPN. Some of them work, some donโ€™t , some have inconsistent results
So the gov is blocking them?
Iโ€™m in Cairo 14 Dec - 10 Jan :)
