They made me show one the three times I've rented there: Naha, Ishigaki and up north on the main island...you may be able to rent a scooter without one. FWIW I got some "fake" IDP from a Chinese website and it's worked fine globally...

You might like the Kumano region. It's ~100km south of Osaka so maybe a bit too far a day trip. I'll be visiting Mount Koya (north Kumano) tomorrow (about 90 mins from Namba by train) and staying there overnight.

What’s the best way to find a place to stay long term in Japan and find coworkers spaces? I’m completely new to fully remote life.

We went to Minoo park and waterfall. It was great fyi! So close to the city and right now the momiji (Japanese maple) are fresh and bright green.

The whole southern part of the island below Osaka is beautiful, in particular the coastline. The forest and mountains is well worth exploring too (wakayama)

You’d be right, but I’ve been doing the 180 days for the last 3 years. Finding remote work in the U.S. is rough right now, and I have no leads.

I’ve been considering this 180 days thing myself. Have you guys been doing the 180 days, then spending another 180 days outside the country before returning?

Or do you not necessarily have to wait that long?

I've done both (consecutive and non). Ended up buying a place in Tokyo but never bothered with PR. I still like being nomadic. Haven't had an issue flying in and out at the end of 90 days but mostly I'm just there in Spring and Fall (Summer is horrible in Tokyo).

I did 90 in, quick trip out, then another 90.

Honestly man, there's not going to be a tech job that you can do that a local can't do, especially with shit Japanese. All the people I know that have interesting tech jobs in Japan (Palantir, GS, etc) were hired in the US and then transferred to the Japanese office. My advice, if you really want to live in Japan, is to take the ALT/teaching route. Get a contract/apartment. Grind to N1. Do side hustles (I know people making $3k a month doing stupid Instagram photography and ramen tours in Tokyo) and get to a position where you can add value to a Western company expanding to the market.

Come down to Shimoda, it's 3h train from Tokyo. But beautiful coastal town
