Rent Toyota Hiace. Pretty inexpensive from my April trip. Take the highway - avoid those winding roads (shorter, few bucks cheaper).

sorry but this wording gives the wrong impression. the way Naz worded it gives the right impression "It is a bit more expensive if you aim to match the comfort of Vietnam.". "established" is a keyword. those places as I see it have been operating for a period of time like a decade+ and competition has levelled it out so you get better value for money like the quality of accommodation you get for $x per month. concrete example is Hikkaduwa vs Ahangama (former established, latter not).

the bottom end of living cos is way low if you are willing to live simple.

also unfortunately high import taxes mean many nice things are closer to or more expensive than Europe and the US.
