Rent Toyota Hiace. Pretty inexpensive from my April trip. Take the highway - avoid those winding roads (shorter, few bucks cheaper).

other than hiring a Hiace or car with driver....

train from Cololmbo Fort station, the most scenic, the cheapest, least comfortable, slowest will take all day especially if it rains so start very early in the morning.

get a car/hiace to kandy then the train to Ella (that stretch is actually the scenic part but also the slow segment).

tuk tuk / Uber / PickMe / HellaGo to station. on the other end i cannot remember if it's walkable or not, been a few years. Google maps will answer that for you .

sorry but this wording gives the wrong impression. the way Naz worded it gives the right impression "It is a bit more expensive if you aim to match the comfort of Vietnam.". "established" is a keyword. those places as I see it have been operating for a period of time like a decade+ and competition has levelled it out so you get better value for money like the quality of accommodation you get for $x per month. concrete example is Hikkaduwa vs Ahangama (former established, latter not).

the bottom end of living cos is way low if you are willing to live simple.

also unfortunately high import taxes mean many nice things are closer to or more expensive than Europe and the US.

Any recommendation for Sri Lanka In Nov/Dec for stays? I’m planning to go for a month and don’t know where to go. I stayed in Hiriketiya + Ahangama in the past but I’m going solo this time. Plan on surf early in the morning + working just after :)

I spent 2 weeks in November in weligama (surfing) in 2024 and it was quite good for beginner/early intermediate level. We surfed 2/3 times a day and there would generally be ok waves

Whoops, I was in Mirissa, no Weligama itself, tho we surfed in weligama. My surf/yoga camp was ok (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ciZandaaVXRkFUvb8?g_st=ac) loads of international folks, so good vibes, but Mirissa itself was pretty boring. Weligama felt more alive

Ah, check for issues with internet/electricity in Sri Lanka now - 2 years ago we had internet barely working most of the day and occasional electricity outages. It was ok for me as I was vacationing, but if you're looking to work remotely - can be an issue

Places are installing starlink now. So internet performance can be a lot better (I use it at home, perfect video calls with Europe and US)

Weligama and Ahangama are different setups. Try both. Both great. Heading to Weligama for a bit right now actually lol

Also check out Kabalana beach for surf and hanging.
