Montepulciano is not really small speaking about Italy, it's 13000 people. I live in a 2000 one and there are many much smaller ones. If you are interested in small villages to have some kind of Italian experience, have a look at Umbria, Marche, Abruzzo too, many prefer them because less touristic/crowded, and cheaper

There are very small villages that also have the train station, you may want to have a look at that, especially if you don't plan to rent a car or a motorbike. Once I hosted a Japanese girl that after being passed in Marche went for more than two weeks in a 200 people village in Basilicata hitchhiking... it depends a lot on you. I would suggest you Spello, it's 8k people, touristic but not too much, close to Foligno and on the way to Firenze. It's in Umbria, it wouldn't work if you want Toscana because of the name

Well, I suppose because I couldn't find yet a place where I would live better 😅 and probably there is a reason if my family in five/six generations moved many times but always in the same village, and basically all my friends are still there, even those (like me) that could easily leave

Both, the company I work for since many years is fully distributed and it pays well enough. I live in a great little village, in one of the most beautiful, vary, safe and comfortable region in the world. I can also add that there are plenty of "rich people from the North" (Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, England) that comes there and buy houses, so probably it's not that bad.

Stavo valutando proprio oggi con la mia fidanzata se però fare questo (contattando host etc), oppure se dedicare il tempo magari non so a fare 200 euro in più con cui pagare un alloggio (pure una stanzetta e in extremis anche ostello) e piuttosto pagare quindi così tramaite airbnb. Couchsurfing nel 2025 è ancora valido? Ne vale la pena se uno ha anche bisogno di mantenere della stabilità? Pensavo di fare tipo un viaggio di 5 notti al mese oppure due viaggi di 3 notti al mese

Hospex needs great adaptability, and the main reason to do it shouldn't be saving money, unless maybe you are 18. Furthermore looking for a place is quite time consuming. It could make sense leaving a public request one or two months before to see if someone is going to invite you, searching a bit with keywords (i.e. digital nomad, engineer, artist, musician, ...) to see if there is someone you would like to spend time with, and if it doesn't work book a place and pay for it.

That's like a very broad question. Some cities are cheap, some are not. Depends on what you want to have in/around the city. And WHEN you rent is also very important

In a small/medium town not too touristical (regions like Marche or Umbria) and with some services you could find a 80 m2 for 500€/month for a long term rental. If you want to go to Milan/Firenze you can multiple x3 and cut in a half the size of the flat. Renting for a few months is more expensive of course, and it can be much more expensive if you plan to go to a coastal town in high season
