Hey guys, I'm an Iranian-born Canadian citizen planning to visit San Diego in May. With all the recent tensions between Canada and the U.S., I've heard that Iranian-born Canadians have been facing more difficulties entering the U.S. lately. Is this true? Has anyone had issues recently, or know of any changes that could affect travel. Thank you

asphnpcfhgkxxiboee rkbaegrquyun Iโ€™m considering visiting Miami next month, any tips on affordable accommodations?
allgo 1mo
Tip #1: unless you're a legal resident, reconsider your visit in the light of the recent detentions, strip searches, and electronic device searches. And remember these are only the high-profile cases that have made news.

Tip #1: unless you're a citizen, reconsider your visit in the light of the recent detentions, strip searches, and electronic device searches. And remember these are only the high-profile cases that have made news. Green card holders have also been affected.
allgo 1mo
Have you read what happened to the Canadian citizen who visited the US?
allgo 1mo
You're flirting with some risks by visiting the US and driving a cybertruck. Hopefully you won't be affected.
minroz 1mo
Rules havent changed, so no more risks today than what there was in 2024.
Room temperature IQ individuals vandalizing other peoples properties is not going to stop me from doing what I want to do. There has been about 45k Cybertrucks delivered so far, the probability of my being affected is extremely low. Besides this is what we have insurance for.
allgo 1mo
Have you considered this? Scroll down a bit...
wingbeats 1mo
I'd be very careful. Things have been a mess.
wingbeats 1mo
Do lots of research ahead of time and check developments closer to your trip c:
allgo 1mo
Do you realize the lack of logic in this "argument"?
allgo 1mo
No
allgo 1mo
These detained tourists
Any history? Curious what they are using as the reason
A close Polish friend that was working on a boat as a hostess and chef just got deported too. Maybe cuz of overstaying visa?
atti1a 1mo
Follow the rules and you will be fine.
allgo 1mo
As this commenter says, "Customs agents can deny you entry for any real or imaginary reason. Your documentation doesn't matter."
allgo 1mo
I would tell you where this advice belongs but I want to follow the rules of this channel
minroz 1mo
Have the rules changed? As far as I can see nothing has actually changed.
Meaning there is no more risk today than it was in 2024 or in 2023 when I last was in the US
allgo 1mo
Drawing that conclusion is fallacious. While the rules may have remained the same, their enforcement has clearly changed radically.
minroz 1mo
I'm sorry, but I have to act like all rules are actively being enforced. Even tho they might not be. What is the point of having laws/rules if they are not being enforced?

So no, from my point of view nothing have changed for me or my visit to the states.
I understand that you might view it differently if you assumed a rule or law would not be enforced, but I never did. So for me nothing has changed.
But what actual immigration/visa rules did these travellers break? Every story mentioning them clearly states that there was nothing illegal about their stay. They either had a valid visa or a visa waiver and none had over stayed their visa.
allgo 1mo
Tell that to xnnvvneohwwdsl and znezdipl
allgo 1mo
Remember that movie trope with the police officer who smashes your tail lights and then fines you?
atti1a 1mo
๐Ÿคฃ
minroz 1mo
Well duh, but authority personel didn't just suddenly start misusing their power. That has been happening since forever. With about 200k visitors a day, you are bound to have some bad incidents, which gets reported on now, which is good.

But just because it wasent reported on before doesn't mean that it didn't happen.
atti1a 1mo
ehtedoaxo remember, visiting another country is a privilege, not a right. While there, one is under that nation's rules. As a guest, one can be removed at anytime, (like private property). Finally, insinuating the US is more corrupt than Mexico, or 90% of other countries is wrong.. maybe travel more? Or don't visit :)
allgo 1mo
Who / where insinuated that?

And what other country detains visitors from the EU/UK/CA for weeks or in solitary confinement?
atti1a 1mo
"roughly 95% of countries have laws allowing detention for a week or more if you break their laws"... including EU/UK/CA :)

According to the NBC article linked above:

"Two hours later, she calls me and says, โ€˜Hey, I'm going to be deported back to Germany. They think I'm coming here to work.โ€™"

So the US authorities believe they were going to work on a tourist visa. Whether what they were going to do counts as work or not, I don't know. We're mostly nomads here that work on tourist visas. We know the risk when we go to various countries. Many of us have been denied entry because of this. This isn't something that's unique to the US, although I know that the US has always been more hostile toward the idea of people working on tourist visas, even in the case of, say, a remote, foreign employer, than many other countries are.

And yes, the US can deny entry for basically no reason or any reason. I believe most countries operate like this. For example, I frequently visit Peru, and it's always been my understanding that it's up to the immigration officer to decide whether or not they let me in. But in actual practice, someone being turned down is rare. As it probably is for the US as well.
Very true. This has always been the case, nothing has changed in this regard.
This has been true for the longest time. More cases are now being reported, but not sure if the actual number of such incidents has increased or the reporting has increased.
allgo 1mo
"break their laws" in what way?

Is showing up at the border with a service exchange intent (eg. house/pet sitting vs. staying in that house, with no monetary exchange, as arranged through TrustedHouseSitters) breaking the law already?

None of these high profile cases today I can't link here but google the Forbes article (it lists 4) involve bringing any forbidden items for instance - which would be grounds for detention (maybe)

Or are you talking about committing a "crime" after you've been admitted?

Some references would clarify this.

This is what's increased - https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2025/01/26/ice-arrests-raids-trump-quota/
allgo 1mo
published stats for phone searches will by available in 2026. The article I sent showed they had been increasing beforehand already.
minroz 1mo
No, in your original post you said phone searches. None of your articles support this statement as far as I can see.
minroz 1mo
By this statement we have no way of knowing until 2026
allgo 1mo

Dude, you can be as optimistic as you want and focus on only "Mac Book Pro M4 Max searches" if you want. The reality is very different, and I've already done too much work trying to make you aware of it. Sayo-nara
minroz 1mo
Iโ€™m well aware of what the 3 letter agencies do, Iโ€™m personally very against it. But Iโ€™m not a resident so I have no say in the matter.

Reporting does not mean that itโ€™s factually correct, a report that โ€œsuggestsโ€ anything carries a large uncertainty as there is no way to know the validity of the claims.
atti1a 1mo
speaks for itself. check: state.gov
minroz 1mo
I hold a Norwegian passport, I have flights for a 1week stay. I have family back home, I have a conference Iโ€™m attending.

There should be very little uncertainty with my visit, if there is, itโ€™s quite evident that Iโ€™m very pro USA. And am invested finically inn several US companies.

If I somehow manage to make them suspicious about my visit, then thatโ€™s entirely my own fault. I am well aware of their rights to turn me away, and as I have said, nothing has changed for me in 2025 compared to any other year.
atti1a 1mo
have a great trip

How is the US right now? Iโ€™ve been in Brazil a while but am considering returning to my home state (Florida) for an internship in a new field. Iโ€™ve seen some not so great stuff in the news lately but I guess thatโ€™s been the case for a few years now
wingbeats 1mo
If you have us passport, should be just fine. There's just frequent protests at town halls/state capitols but otherwise nothing major has changed
atti1a 1mo
US is good.. frankly doing better. News is significantly overblown.
rcsligar 1mo
Ok good to hear, lot of negativity in press lately. Politically Iโ€™m neutral, just wanted to hear from somebody there
rcsligar 1mo
Iโ€™m thinking of returning there from Brazil, as itโ€™s not really working out for me over here too well
atti1a 1mo
US, and Florida + Miami are on the rise. Would recommend
rcsligar 1mo
The main thing that keeps me from going back there is I donโ€™t like how strict the laws are. Iโ€™ve never been pulled over by police in any other country
Hi visiting from UK for a few months, need a US number for some 2FA texts. Whatโ€™s best/cheapest solution? ๐Ÿ™
beaucr 1mo
you can be a nerd and use twilio.

not the best and easiest, but the cheapest!
How would that work?
beaucr 1mo
just signup

buy a us number

and then check console messages when you get a text
jasiek 1mo
tello.com
To save you some hassle here, often Twilio / Skype (rip) / other VoIP numbers wonโ€™t work for SMS 2FA, especially for banks and PayPal, it knows theyโ€™re not a normal number and will reject. Sometimes it works some of the time but if youโ€™ve got money riding on it, the headache is not worth it.
If youโ€™re physically visiting the US, then you can grab a real physical US sim when you arrive, use it for both your local number and your internet data while youโ€™re there, and then when you leave the country, the telco will likely cancel your sim unfortunately (even if you keep paying them).
If you want to keep the number long term for 2FA access when youโ€™re overseas, you can buy a cheap android phone to a US based friend and ask them for the SMS when you need it (obviously a pain)
Or you can port your number to one of my phones and Iโ€™ll keep it on and automatically forward the SMS to you via email
jasiek 1mo
tello.com works beautifully over wifi as it uses regular GSM infrastructure which gets tunnelled over the internet

This one works with banks, works outside the US for about 5$ a month

Bought it on eBay, my brother activated and used it in the US and brought it to Europe ๐Ÿ˜œ If u not gonna visit the US physically

its not about taxes, US is expensive
ezh047 10d
unreasonable expensive. 1 day in LA is basically whole month in Vietnam

there are some beautiful nature

Agree with that

Good to stay maybe a week to visit national parks, not for long term work
I will be there for a few months but I have a lot of friends that will host me

otherwise I wouldn't spend so much time

Yea forget paying for hotels or airbnbs there itโ€™s ridiculous
Im living in Salt Lake, is not too expensive.

Currently living in Boise - USA also just a big, spread-out place. Other countries are like....1-3 nomad favorite cities it seems like. USA has a lot of places to go but need money to get there
A car is essential because of the poor public transit
Depending on one's travel appetite RV'ing could also be an interesting option
My dad is a big RVer and thatโ€™s one of my favorite memories from childhood
My retired parents are RVers, scuttling around the US. Probably the best way to experience different parts of the country if one can handle some occasional scary driving. And renting a spot in an RV campground is more affordable than other rental options (but can still get pricey in high demand places)

I'm over here dreaming of trains ๐Ÿฅฒ
Yea my dad almost got in an accident several times, especially on narrow roads but itโ€™s probably the best way to see the country
Only issue is dealing with the sewage ๐Ÿ˜…
Speaking of traveling around US. Starting next monday, I want to hop around west side of USA. Thinking in between California and Colorado as starting points. Anyone wants to join?
