gigclwyrzti welcome to you and your wife ๐Ÿ™Œ

There are quite a few people from Japan here or coming, it may be helpful to tap into their experiences with flying here as general advice from Asia is good. You can always try Google Flights and Skyscanner which are helpful with exploring routes as well
I was told I needed the Yellow Fever Vaccine certificate by the airline (coming from Brazil) but they didn't ask at the border
padsevsxvzew did you have to show it to the airline? That's where I think a lot of people get stuck with the airline but not sure
Nup. No one asked for it
falconb0 3mo
I have been personally asked for the vaccine card multiple times. I'm a US passport holder, but I've frequently come to Paraguay from either Peru or Bolivia. I don't think I've been asked if I was coming from the US.

I know someone who is an Ecuadorian passport holder who had a 1 hour layover in Peru and was asked for the vaccine card, and was almost denied entry into Paraguay. She had a vaccine but the certificate was new, newer than 14 days or however long you have to wait. The airline ended up rerouting her to Buenos Aires and then she was let in.

Also, my girlfriend is Bolivian and we were both asked when we flew from Bolivia to Paraguay a few months ago.
replay 3mo
Interesting, I must have been really lucky until now, most of the time when I entered I didn't even have my vaccine certificate with me. I'll try to bring it with me from now on ๐Ÿค”
Maybe it helped me that I usually immigrated using a Paraguayan cedula instead of a foreign passport, but that's just a guess
I heard that's exactly the case, that you don't need a vaccine certificate if you're a Paraguayan resident
falconb0 3mo
Yeah to clarify... every time I've entered Paraguay, I was not a Paraguayan resident. I just finally got my residency a few weeks ago.

Iโ€™m going Colombia to Panama to Asuncion on Copa airlines. I guess I will see what happens ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Iv had people ask me for it before when going from Rio to Colombia before. So Iโ€™m pretty sure the Brazil intel is correct lol. Thanks for responses.
No problem I think that path you'll be good from what I've heard. See you in town soon maybe ๐Ÿ˜
Copa asked me for a return flight fyi
So if you don't have one you may want to buy a onward flight ticket for $10 bucks for proof if needed
Might depend on where you are coming from etc but just a heads up
If anyone is in town and joining coworking this week, can you give this an RSVP to get it live for tomorrow?

Hello everyone, nice to meet you!

I'm Juan Pablo, from Chile. I'll be in Asunciรณn between May 26th and 30th for business meetings.
I have a digital business and will soon be moving to Asunciรณn in search of opportunities, a low cost of living, and security.
Does anyone want to meet at a cafe or co-working space on Tuesday the 27th at 3:30 PM?

Best regards and thank you.

Hey Juan there's Asunciรณn entrepreneurs networking event in English on 28 May at Gran Hotel del Paraguay at 19:30 if you're interested to join?

As a European I agree. The amount of people in Paraguay who tell me that they're happy that recently more foreigners are coming to their country would be unimaginable in Europe.
We've got a number of local Paraguayans in the coworking group as well who are remote workers and like to share about Paraguay and learn about other places/cultures too

I got the impression that lately the ATM transaction fees when withdrawing with foreign cards have increased... They used to be 25.000 per transaction in most banks, but as of late I've seen multiple that charge 40.000 per transaction. Was I just unlucky, or did they change that in all the Paraguayan banks?
replay 2mo
The withdrawal limit remains at 1.500.000 pyg per transaction
What bank?
replay 2mo
I checked Familiar, Continental and Itaรบ
replay 2mo
But I'm not sure if all the ATMs of these banks charge the same fees or if it can differ per ATM
replay 2mo
The ones I checked are all in Las Mercedes
replay 2mo
I just found a better ATM:

at the Ueno ATM at the airport I was able to withdraw 3.000.000 PYG and the fee was only 25.000 PYG

I withdrew from Revolut

Hey everyone, anyone with a family here? I'm wondering what schooling options would be available in Asunciรณn for my 10 year old. Ideally I'd like something Waldorf/Steiner like, but not necessarily. Screen-free and comic-con-free would be a good start. I'd like teaching to be done in Spanish. Not sure if this increases or decreases options based on previous criteria ๐Ÿ™ƒ
replay 2mo
I don't have kids myself, but my wife has many nephews in Paraguay.
She thinks in general ASA (The American School of Asuncion) is the best, but since you want the teaching to be done in Spanish she says that Lumen and San Andres would also be pretty good
You can withdraw up to 10 million at the one called The Matrix in Santa Teresa if you are looking to pull more out, the fee was 25 last time I was there but might be 40k not sure.
replay 2mo
Thank you! Going to try that
Let me know how it goes, I got 7.5 million from the ATM there but heard you could do up to 10 million

Interestingly the staff there told me only 1.5 million ๐Ÿ˜‚

I made the mistake of asking them before trying but then went ahead and tried ๐Ÿ‘

Is anyone here a member of one of the big social clubs? I'm thinking of joining Rakiura but not sure if it's worth it
replay 2mo
I'm a member of club Centenario and I really like it. The one in the city offers a lot. They even have a place where I can work (in a library) which is close the the gym, and an Olympic size indoor swimming pool and Sauna. So it's kind of a perfect combination if you want to spend your days working and exercising.
replay 2mo
They also have many restaurants and cultural events and other activities
alexrod94 2mo
That oneโ€™s invitation only and fairly expensive though, right?
replay 2mo
Tbh I'm not sure, my wife has been a life long member, that's how I got in.

I was under the impression that you can just apply for it, but I'm not sure what the process is
replay 2mo
Regarding the fee, iirc I'm paying 400k/month for me and my wife
alexrod94 2mo
Don't they have a one time fee of like $70k?
replay 2mo
I think I got a discount because of my family relationship, I don't know what the usual price is

Iirc I paid a one time fee that was like $1k

Does someone understand why compared to the beginning of the year the USD is up relative to the PYG?
Relative to the major currencies of the world and also relative to other latin american currencies the USD is down 5-10% since the beginning of the year, only relative to the PYG it is up, so I was just wondering what makes this currency pair special? Is it possible that US exports to Paraguay increased a lot or Paraguayan exports to the US decreased a lot since the beginning of the year, which could cause this?
villya 1mo
Primarily because of deficit trade balance since March. 30% of paraguay total export is derived from the exports of soybeans and its derivatives to mercosur neighbours but soybean global price has been in declining trend. On the import side, there's a jump in machinery and spare parts volume demand this year
villya 1mo
Hi everyone, feel free to join our community meetup tomorrow at La Vermuteria downtown. We will be there from 19:30 onwards
villya 1mo
Here's the address: https://maps.app.goo.gl/EGKtLP8cDTgRK1LLA
villya 1mo
Oh yea to add a bit of context, roughly 80% of Paraguay trade balance is using USD. That's why trade balance deficit will significantly depreciate PYG against USD

replay 1mo
Thank you for this recommendation!
I tried it today and it worked perfectly, I took out 10 million and the ATM charged me 25.000 PYG.
For years I've been trying to find the cheapest / most convenient method of brining money into Paraguay and this seems to be the new winner, what I did today was the following:

I have a Revolut Metal account with a Swiss address, it allows me to withdaw up to 800 CHF per month for free, that's around $1000 USD
I took out 10.000.000 PYG from the ATM, it charged the card 10.025.000 PYG with the fees, that's $1268 USD with Revolut's rate. Since that's about $270 over the free withdrawal limit, they charged me 2% on the $270, so $5.3 USD.
The total cost was $5.3 USD for Revolut and 25.000 PYG ($3.1) for the ATM, so $8.4 USD in total to bring $1260 into the country, that's a total cost of only 0.6%
Furthermore, it's also convenient and low-risk because I can take out the cash and put it back into the same ATM to put it into my Ueno account, without ever leaving the building with the cash

The only alternative method which I know which is cheaper is a traditional international wire transfer into a Paraguayan account, but that's always a hassle because they want to see tons of paperwork to proof the source of funds in those banks that I've tried.
Glad that worked for you!

At least on r/paraguay, a lot of Paraguayans appear to have the opinion that Encarnaciรณn has better quality of life... I can't judge it myself, I've only spend a few days there, but it might be worth it to take a look as well. It's definitely less international though.

I wouldn't recommend ciudad del este, it has too much shady stuff going on

๐Ÿฅณ Party! Sat 26 July ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿป

Hi everyone! Something new and fun coming up in Asunciรณn next week - a private mini music festival, featuring 4 amazing live bands in an intimate venue, on a Saturday evening ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŽธ

The basics:
๐Ÿ˜ƒ Normal hours! Doors open at 7pm, first band starts at 8pm, last band finishes at 12:30am, followed by a DJ for the afterparty
๐ŸŽธ 3x 45 minute sets, 1x 90 minute set
๐ŸŽค All songs in the English language
๐Ÿค— No assigned seats or tables, all joining in together, with a dance floor area at the front of a large stage
๐Ÿป Bar selling a range of food, beers, mixers, and fernet; bottles of spirits are available at low prices for pre-purchase only

The bands performing are some of the absolute best cover bands in Asunciรณn, paying tribute to legendary performers you know and love:

๐Ÿ‘ฒ The Beatles (Madera Noruega; 9pm)

How is street safety in Asuncion compared to Buenos Aires and Florianรณpolis?
replay 6d
It's not perfect, but better than most other South American cities, including Buenos Aires and Florianopolis.
There are a few areas in Asuncion that you better avoid, as long as you do that you'll be fine.
๐Ÿ’ฏ agree, I've never felt unsafe here anywhere in the city honestly... Especially in the core areas you'll probably spend your time.

Using basic common sense for travelers, also my wife has felt very comfortable getting around on her own as well
replay 6d
Just don't make the mistake of booking an Airbnb/Hotel that's right in the centro of the city... Over the past 5-8 years most businesses have moved away from the city center towards the eastern neighborhoods like Las Mercedes, Mariscal Lopez, Recoleta, Villa Morra, Santo Domingo, etc. Now there is no reason to stay in the city center anymore and the city center is also probably one of the riskier areas where you might not want to walk through the dark alleys alone at night.
I have some friends that live downtown and like it but I agree that most places mentioned above would be better.

Near Shopping Del Sol area for sure
