I do want to have the option to drive a car, so will just get the IDP.

It seems the process of getting the IDP online (while abroad), and the validity of the soft copy of the IDP is uncertain too. I guess I will do a trip to the homeland to get the physical IDP before heading to Thailand then. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ
I asked my family to ship it to me in Thailand.
I applied from Delhi and shipping took about a week and less than 500 inr to get here.
Transport dept will only ship it to your registered Indian address though
I used India post.
If you have any family member or friend there, might be a decent option( definitely cheaper than flying back๐Ÿ˜„)
Use a vpn while applying, otherwise the payment wonโ€™t go through( for IDP )
gk 25d
Found out yesterday that you can use a pink id card for government digital services.
That's probably the most useful thing about it, in fact.

Was looking at USD โ†’ THB last weekend, found something weird. One top ranked provider widened from 0.15% to 1.01% between Friday night and Saturday morning. Same corridor, same amount, THB 305 less landing on the other end.

Full breakdown here if useful: https://zoeylee.substack.com/p/the-provider-that-saved-you-the-most?r=bpd1y

Anyone here pick a different provider for weekends vs weekdays, or just stick with one?
gk 24d
I use Curve most of the time. I've been curious for a while how it compares.
I think mostly Wise wins, but it'd be interesting to see it tracked.
Don't think that's applicable to a US citizen.
Not actually applicable to me either since I'm not Eu/UK resident at all... but still.
gk 24d
Also curious how Moreta compares, since a lot of people are using that.
danamo 24d
I used moreta but not curve. I liked the ability to pay via QR code in Thailand and Vietnam but itโ€™s partial and not 100% reliable. Plus the fees are comparable if not higher to getting cash from a digital bank account ( I use Revolut )
danamo 24d
By partial I mean that only business qr code work. And most of the time you can pay by card there too. The important time is street vendors QR that last time I tried (January) didnโ€™t work yet.
danamo 24d
By not reliable I mean that it sometimes either hangs during payment and you donโ€™t know if it went through or during top ups and you might get stuck with low balance.
gk 24d
Huh. Earlier this month an acquaintance claimed he was using Moreta constantly without issue.
gk 24d
I have no skin in the game regarding Moreta. I have thai bank accounts.
I only use curve for cashback rewards on larger purchases, I don't use it on a daily basis or at shops.
Or when travelling outside Thailand, obviously.
danamo 24d
Itโ€™s a relatively new service in active development so Iโ€™m totally aware it might have changed or I might have had an unfortunate combo happen to me ^ ^
deborah 24d
doesn't actually matter where you're a citizen or resident, the comparison works for all available corridors. we're expanding based on what users tell us matters most (landing page:ย https://www.tryglintz.com/)

on Wise, it's interesting bc they have really wide coverage but they're actually only top ranked on 3 out of 111 corridors we track rn. usually they land #2 or #3, and on some routes they're the most expensive option

the assumption that "Wise mostly wins" is pretty common but the data doesn't really back it up, depends heavily on the corridor

Curve and Moreta we don't track yet, but good to know people are using them

if you want to see how your usual corridor stacks up you can check here, it breaks down every fee layer so you see what actually arrives on the other end

app.tryglintz.com

what corridor do you usually send on?
deborah 24d
for us, we pull live data from providers directly, not estimates or averages. every corridor shows the actual rate, deposit fee, FX markup, withdrawal cost, and speed at that moment. so when you check a corridor you're seeing what each provider would actually give you today, ranked by what lands on the other end
gk 24d
I'll DM ๐Ÿ™‚
divyaansh 23d
Have been using Moreta around Vietnam - and haven't found any place where it doesn't work. I load money into it using crypto though, so the overhead is just the ~1.5% fee they charge while spending.

My top priority is 0% markup cards though - if the vendor accepts haha!

Hey, planning to go as a digital nomad to Bali mid-may. How is it? Would you say its a nice time to go or better to go further down the line
saul5P 23d
Hi, Iโ€™m in Ao Nang right now and selling my Sony XM5 headphones.
They work perfectly, just donโ€™t need them anymore.
Comes with case.
7000 THB, can meet today ๐Ÿ‘leaving soon.

You probably want to ask that question in #bali instead of #thailand ๐Ÿ™‚

You can rent a flight for some hours, there are websites for that

Anyone can tell me how's the overall vibe on Koh Phangan right now? Still crowded? Are Nomad MeetUps happening?
Not sure whether I should go there or to Bali. Thx ๐Ÿ™

hi, does anyone have recommendations on coliving/coworking space in bangkok? (like alt chiangmai types) thanks!
khizrs 17d
Curve is good if you have an underlying card collecting airlines
nenadboka 17d
Hello guys, question for Nomads who lived in Koh Samui and Ko phangan. Would you recommend for long term? Whar are biggest cons for both places and which you like more for digital nomad life and is it community good there?
gk 17d
I don't think it matters what the underlying rewards are, exactly. Only that they're there, and rewarding.
And for my underlying cards, Curve provides an apple pay proxy which the cards don't allow.
That said, collecting airlines would be cool ๐Ÿ˜ŽHonestly, just having one airplane would probably be enough for me, but owning emirates would be epic too.
How much do you have to spend on a credit card to get a medium sized airline?
khizrs 17d
Probs about 20k
Hi guys! Iโ€™m in Phuket for working online and hopefully surfing. Anyone in Phuket/Patong? Iโ€™d like to network with other nomads
Koh Samui is more suitable for families, offering chill, relaxed vibes and beautiful nature. Koh Phangan is more about communities and events, attracting open-minded people. Both are suitable for long-term stays; however, Koh Phangan is smaller, so you need to have friends there, otherwise, it will become boring too quickly.
nenadboka 15d
So where is stronger digital nomad community? Koh Phangan?
adamant 14d
Hi guys! Going to be in Bangkok, June 3-13 and then in Chiang Mai from June 13- July 5. Is anyone else is there in these dates?
alexlm 14d
Hey all โ€” just joined. Been in Bangkok for a bit.

Originally from France , working in sales. Mostly bouncing between work and trying to stay active here.

Still figuring out the city a bit open to meeting people / activities.
Hey all, I am selling my ikea marcus office chair which is in very good condition, message me if you are in Bangkok and interested. Sorry could not find any channel for second hand stuff

Wow - Wise update for Thialand is horrific:
To send transfers between 2 non-Thai bank accounts โ€” for example US to Singapore โ€” payments must go via your Thai account, requiring 2 currency conversions (to THB, then to the destination currency). This will increase the total transfer cost.
You wonโ€™t be able to withdraw money from Wise in currencies other than Thai baht to a bank account in another country. If you receive money in a currency other than Thai baht, weโ€™ll automatically convert and add it to your THB.
gk 11d
Payment limits are also utterly insane.
gk 11d
I think that second bulletpoint might have been wrong - it's not on their blog post version, just in the email
gk 11d
This is obviously all about tax. It forces everything to go through THB, basically patriating money constantly so you can't use Wise for overseas holdings at all.
I think it's aiming at Thais.
Some fast wifi here in bangkok
Staying at the Karaarom hotel!
Anyone living in Thailand long term? Iโ€™ve been in Bangkok now for a couple months. Debating on getting DTV, Iโ€™ve been learning Thai also. Where do you think offers the best lifestyle? Bangkok is cool but itโ€™s a bit too compressed for me long term. The fun is repetitious and I think it starts to feel like a transient hub. Curious to hear some thoughts
I moved to Bangkok 4 months ago and signed a long-term lease there. I'm on DTV.

It's been awesome so far. People are great, Infrastructure is really good, and the airports allow you to go anywhere in Asia easily.

I finally have a stable address after 4 years of nomading, although I still plan to travel around Asia and Europe for about 3-4 months during the year.
Itโ€™s your favorite place?
Phangan
So far, yes for long-term living
Phangnan seems like a sick vibe. Iโ€™m training at one yoga in Bangkok, their main studio is out there.. you like it for year round living?
You donโ€™t miss the nature at all?
I used to, during my first 2x times in the city when I was just traveling. After 5-6 weeks I would go a bit sick of all the concrete and constant noise surrounding me

The main issue was actually that I was living in districts that were very busy and with not much nature around: Phrom Phong and Rama 9. Now I live a bit outside of downtown, surrounded by a bit of trees and some parks. It feels much better.
what neighborhood?
Whereโ€™d you move to bro? Iโ€™m staying at the Voque on Sukhumvit 51 now. Itโ€™s an upscale pocket of thong lo but I find it can still feel crammed. I think Bangkok is all about you play it, some areas like Asok are 100% no go for living for me

Iโ€™m right next to True Digital Park (Punnawithi BTS station). A bit outside of downtown, but still close enough so I can be in Asok within ~25min door to door

Heyyy will anyone be in Koh Tao next week?
nomigo 9d
Anyone here on DTV visa who can guide how long the process might take?

We spent a few months in Bangkok couple years ago with our then 2 y/o, and are thinking of doing a slightly longish term again.
For me, it took like 2 weeks to be approved
gk 9d
Yeah - I've lived in Thailand for 4+ years. My home is on Ko Lanta, and I like it there.
Hi Joseph! I live in Koh Samui since 2024! I didn't chose Bangkok since I prefer the island life. it's more relaxing here, and it's easy to connect with people doing some activities. I just started learining salsa and bachata taking lessions, and there are weekly dance parties here to dance with other people. I also joined a board game group that does weekly game nights. I also went to language school to learn Thai.
I think it's important to find a community to join and connect with people.

Hope this helps!!
lots of expat living here long term. koh samui and KP are two different vibes... I suggest you come and check them out and decide!
Took about 3 weeks for me
nomigo 9d
lphnvsewutteoemjqu khznzfmqbselna thank you so much! Also, just to confirm itโ€™s an online process if applying from the US, right? No visit to the consulate required?
I believe it depends on the embassy. I applied from France, and didnโ€™t have to visit the Paris embassy at all. They just called me.

But I believe some people had to come in for an interview in certain countries.
You apply online, but get assigned to the embassy where youโ€™re currently staying I believe
Anybody knows a trustworthy secondhand bike seller in chiang mai? Or someone that could help me with inspections?
Thanks Vicky I appreciate your detailed reply ๐Ÿ™, the community piece is so important. Iโ€™m considering Samui also. Iโ€™ll probably finish my Thai course here then move somewhere with more nature. Something Iโ€™ve learned is that what works for one person might not work for another. For me Bangkok is a cool place to get things done but day to day it starts to feel cramped. Thatโ€™s just my take.
Will do ๐Ÿ’ฏ
Hi, does anyone know a modern website where I can find 1-month short-term stays in Chiang Mai especially? Apartments, condos โ€ฆ

I know many Facebook groups, but skimming all the unrelated news filtering by price or location is pretty inefficient time spent. I'd prefer a website with filters, like NomadRental / BaanMe (though they're no fit). Thanks!
Going through this now.

I'm hesitant to leave dowtown Asok though because I work 24/7 and when I walk outside I like to be surrounded by people so I don't feel isolated. But I also miss nature- such is life
A trip to Chiang Mai or some island once in a while fixes it ๐Ÿ‘Œ
Hello everyone, my MacBook screen broke, need to get it fixed.
Any ideas where can I get it fixed for a reasonable price and reliable in Chiang Mai?
Thanks in advance
i live in thonglor , tons of greenery here
to be more precise its thonglor ekkamai
Could you share which area or building exactly? I spent a bit of time there and didn't notice much greenery, but maybe I just didn't go to the right places
There is a studio7 near maya mall

I would suggest to get an authorised repair if it makes sense to you financially
Thanks will get the quote from authorised icare as well
when i look ouyt the window i see tons of trees and grass everywhere
