Hi Joseph! I live in Koh Samui since 2024! I didn't chose Bangkok since I prefer the island life. it's more relaxing here, and it's easy to connect with people doing some activities. I just started learining salsa and bachata taking lessions, and there are weekly dance parties here to dance with other people. I also joined a board game group that does weekly game nights. I also went to language school to learn Thai.
I think it's important to find a community to join and connect with people.

I believe it depends on the embassy. I applied from France, and didn’t have to visit the Paris embassy at all. They just called me.

But I believe some people had to come in for an interview in certain countries.

Thanks Vicky I appreciate your detailed reply 🙏, the community piece is so important. I’m considering Samui also. I’ll probably finish my Thai course here then move somewhere with more nature. Something I’ve learned is that what works for one person might not work for another. For me Bangkok is a cool place to get things done but day to day it starts to feel cramped. That’s just my take.

If that works for you, then it’s fine. I don’t like to be scammed by a local guest house on walk-in. Instead I do this:

1. Search for long-term rental on Booking com (2-3 months)
2. Filter to only see accommodation with high amount of reviews, high rating, amenities I like (pool, gym, etc.)
3. Order results from the biggest Genius discount

I’m in Genius lvl 3, so I can get up to 40% off. Book it with free cancellation. Do an additional check with Claude if it can find the same accommodation with better rates. Usually it can’t.

That’s how I found my great apartment in Chiang Mai for the next 2 months for 57 000 THB

Hello, I am going to ko samui form july 10 to august 10 with my wife and out 3 years old daughter. we are looking for a place no too far from the beach, with 1 BR and equiped kitchen. Since we will need to work, the place must also have a strong wifi. do any of you have some suggestion for a place where they have been that can be a good fit for us? Our prefered format would be a solution in a resort with shared pool rather then private villa so we can meet people 😊

Just do it yourself at immigration. Check requirements. Usually you need a passport style pic, copy of the TM30 from where you are staying. Each office is a little different so do a search online.

You can “easily” get a “great” accommodation under 15k per month in CM
And a decent accommodation for under 10k

I am talking about condos with amenities like gyms and swimming pool

Thanks for the details. Now it makes sense. If I plan to stay in Chiang Mai long-term, then I'd consider researching Facebook groups. However, I have limited trust in this channel. So checking apartments in person, talking to the landlords, figuring out contracts, payments, etc. It takes too much time and effort. At least for me.

I agree with both. Leaving for at least 7 days and coming back is a second best option after researching requirements online. I try to avoid bureaucracy. Yet, I want to stay compliant, so I would do a 1-day visa run. 7-day visa run doesn’t raise red flags.

No, TM30 isn't sufficient. You need residency certificate, even if you have a real proof of address.
That's an arbitrary line that CM office might not adhere to, but in Krabi they force you to have a residency certificate even if you can provide a yellow book 🤯
( That changed relatively recently, since my yellow book was sufficient first time. Everyone says the reason is to force paying for residency certs ).
The residency cert will obviously check your TM30, but doesn't hurt to have it.
Sure you know, but you'll also need e-Learning certificate, medical certificate and DLT smart appointment.
AFAIK, you don't actually need a real proof of address if you have a residency cert.

How did you get your driver’s license? I went to a driving school, and they told me they only accept people who can speak Thai. Fair enough.

I have no idea how I can get a driver’s license. I don’t have my country’s driver’s license with me. I spoke with an agent, and she told me I have to go to the embassy to complete some paperwork related to my license.

Has anyone had a similar experience recently?

I speak Thai, but nearly all of the other people who I know who have a Thai driving license speak any Thai.
I think you should try a few other places. Maybe depends on province.

For the motorbike there are schools like Honda in Chiang mai where you can do it in 3 days. I’ve heard of other places where it’s even shorter. I did this, everything was in English, but the license is temporary for 2 years, then need to renew it and it’s good for 5 years
