Interesting that Ko Samui seems to lose some points in scoring due to "Bad" hospitals.
Ko Lanta doesn't have a hospitals score. It has hospitals. I'd wager they're much worse than Samui though.

Samui is like a city. I have been treated twice in Phangan which is quite smaller and it was everything great. Even better than in my home country. So I would say in Samui is much better

My husband got pneumonia on Pangan. Stayed in the hospital for 1 day then got transferred to Samui by ambulance boat for 7 more days for treatment. Both hospitals were ok but not cheap. 30000 BTH per day but it is a private room and I was able to stay with him all those days. He got better, so I guess hospitals work in both places (Pangan and samui). In USA my husband spent in a hospital one day (not related to pneumonia) and it was 180 000 BTH (6000 usd) for a few tests and one paracetamol pill 💊😂 so, don’t get sick in the USA or fly to Thailand if you got sick 😂😂

If you need to stay dry then going by grab car might get you there dry - but I still recommend you use dry bags for your phone etc.. You’ll get completely soaking wet on the roads along the moat, and in nimman and a few more spots. In the quiet areas, if you politely ask “Mai au ka”, you might get lucky…

for events, I think maya will be the most fun for a nomad… you could also join alt_ping river for their songkran fiesta.

Our experience with emergency: We used SafetyWing before and got all the medical expenses reimbursed (more than 10000 usd) but had to pay everything UPFRONT and then got reimbursed (a month later). This was a huge surprise for me!

Not every nomad has lump sum laying around for a medical emergency. Nomads buy insurance so they can avoid this kinds of situations with unexpected lump sum payments… and what if the emergency situation is more than the amount you have available…

When you have emergency, you don’t have time to move money arround…or discuss situation with your insurance company if they can help paying the bill because you can’t afford to pay cash… You are on oxygen and painkillers…No time to discuss policy with your provider… That is where REMEMBERING the text of what you MUST do when you actually got an emergency is useful. I don’t think people even read the full health insurance text—let alone remember it.

I wonder, what if my husband was traveling alone as most of the nomads do… How would he deal with emergency if there is no one to read the policy and do what needs to be done to get the reimbursement later. There is ALOT OF things you MUST do if you want to get reimbursed, and if you don’t do them, most things will be excluded from reimbursement later just because you did not do things properly when you were unconscious having an emergency 🫣

If he was alone, he would have gotten nothing. We got the money only because I read the police multiple times and was checking every document the the hospital provided to make sure it meets the expectation of the policy while paying everything upfront hoping that it would be reimbursed later.

I lived at Ashton Chula Silom - and honestly, it was one of the happiest times of my life.

Fair warning though: if your windows face the street, forget sleeping without earplugs. And I say this as someone who rides a litre-class sportbike - the tuk-tuks outside will absolutely destroy your sleep. Different kind of noise entirely.

But earplugs? Small price to pay. The gym is solid, and the pool is genuinely stunning.

Yeah I guess it’s very much personal preference. I didn’t like the vibes there on the islands and power cuts every 2-3 days on Ko Pangan while you want to work is not really fun either

i think it depends on which airport you enter. with DTV in BKK, they never asked for a return ticket, but at HKT, they made me purchase one to be allowed entry.

You can do one 30 day extension at an immigration office. 1900 bhat and a photo and paperwork. Then you need to exit Thailand.

I got the 30 day extension with no problems in Krabi last year. But visa runs are not likely to work any more. If you want to stay long term you'll probably need a DTV or other long term visa.

You can extend for 30 days and do a visa run later, just make sure to spend 1-2 days in another country before coming back and it's all good. There's also people you can pay and they help you do visa run same day, I know such service in chiang Mai and used it twice (a year ago and 1 month ago)

I wouldn’t recommend relying on this approach anymore, not more than once a year. At least in Bangkok immigration has been tightened up in my experience.

I would not do very short visa runs any longer. 1-2 days visa hops are IMO unlikely to work. out well. Immigration at Bangkok airport has tightened. They are not turning a blind eye to it any longer

Another visa run is likely to draw scrutiny. You might be able to get special terms due to the Middle East situation.

Also, there’s a number of days you can be in Thailand per year (I think it’s calendar year but please check that too) after which, independently of short visa run, they are not supposed to admit you. This always existed but they started enforcing it recently
