At that time we built a community bringing together Shopify merchants. Most spaces and conferences are flooded with Shopify Partners, agencies and freelancers, who always want to sell something.
We wanted to create a safe space for them.

I'm not sure if understand the business 100%. But I think merchants are diversified in different vertical industries and they appear in different channels - unlike Shopify Devs and partners all centred aroudng Shopify. probably segmentize merchants by industry/size and check out there they sit, like unions, or where their customers always go?
