Was curious what the spread looks like on USD and GBP into EUR this week, ran the numbers and it's wider than I expected tbh.

On a $1,000 USD send the top ranked provider delivers EUR 848, worst ranked delivers EUR 802. So EUR 45 lands in rent or doesn't, same dollar amount sent. GBP to EUR is similar, around EUR 51 gap per 1,000 GBP.

Revolut and Circle hanging at the top. US and UK high street banks are the usual suspects at the bottom, eating 3-5% in hidden markup before you ever see it.

Anyone here in Portugal got a setup you swear by for getting USD or GBP into EUR? Wise + local bank, Revolut, stablecoin, some combo?

Yes this is an issue mainly because cafes are so tiny in Lisbon. Starbucks and Honest Greens are fine but finding power is (intentionally) rare. You can always ask though.

I never felt like I was unwelcome when working from A Padaria Portuguesa or Jeronymo café chains for a few hours. Lots of people doing the same.

Never an issue in 5 years, as long as you're quiet just spend a few hours top, and consume a minimum it's alright. And there are plenty of places.
If you take calls then it's another story.

But just use it as an exchange service, don’t use it as a “bank account” in the sense of leaving your money on it because they sometimes randomly determine accounts “suspect” and freeze it (which Revolut does as well by the way)

I’m pretty chill but a little awkward, just looking for genuine connections while I'm there. When I'm not working I’m usually playing guitar, watching anime, or out running (even though I have a total love-hate relationship with exercise).

The south (Algarve) is good for beaches and outdoors activities, more of touristy beach town vibe. The North (Porto region) has more cultural activities, historical sites, etc, but this time of the year is also very good for outdoors stuff, there's the Gerés which is a huge national park where you can do mountain hikes and also has great river beaches. If you like pickleball there's a great place in Gaia (Porto metropolitan area) where I often play. Lisbon is the cosmopolitan big city, where you will never run out of things to do, but it's also the most expensive and sometimes can feel like a giant tourist trap.

Thanks! That's a solid overview! But from your experience, what would you recommend? I'm looking for surf, but I also saw that there's a big music festival named Neopop going on from 6 to 8 of august in the north of Porto.. I just dont want to do central -> north and then south 🤣️️️️️️

I don't hate Lisbon, I'm visiting a friend there tomorrow, but I don't know much of the city. If I was going to make a recommendation, I'd say as you are coming on the summertime, the North is the best because we concentrate most of the cultural stuff this time of the year, in Lisbon it's more spread around and you could go there even in winter and find lots of things to do. From my narrow point of view, the main negative side of Lisbon is it feels too cosmopolitan (like detached from Portuguese cultural roots) and tourist trapy at times, but like I said, I haven't actually lived there so it's not a fair comparison.

If you like surfing, lot's of people do it here up north, at and around Matosinhos. Nazaré which is where the biggest surf competition in the world happens is also nearby, but I believe you only get the real giant waves in the winter
