Does they still have power cuts? I know a foreigner in a small beach town in Guayas who said that electricity is fine now but running water is an issue.

Hi! That is my home city. I think it really depends on what area of the city you are buy generally I wouldn't describe it as "pretty safe"

What if I only plan to visit the Malecón 2000 and Santa Ana areas?

I haven't been there in over a year but if you go during the day you should be fine, just make sure don't put your phone or wallet in your back pockets

I visited both and it was fine. That was 1.5 years ago.
Santa Ana hill was pretty cool at night. I walked up there with some locals from Couchsurfing hangouts.
There was a festival in the city so there were many people around.
They said that usually it's dangerous at night.

I found Guayaquil pretty boring in the 3 days there, too humid and the food sucked.
I heard that there is good seafood if you know where to go.
I heard people there tend to be much more open there than in Quito but I liked Quito much more and stayed for 10 days but it was too cold due to altitude.

I disagree with the food, probably didn't eat at the right spots😳 but I agree, Guayaquil is pretty boring if you are visiting. El malecon, the iguana park and pretty much the only things to do and it has to be during the day. Santa Ana used to be cool at night but now it is dangerous. I know some people to to the cemetery as a touristy place too and there is Cristo del Consuelo that was a sketchy zone when I was young so I can't imagine how it is now😳
