Has anyone here tried renting a van and working from it?
I'm coming over at the end of this month for a telemark event but then I'm thinking I'll just work from the van and go to different ski resorts.
biggihs 2mo
This might be a terrible idea lol
majariusz 2mo
I did but not in the winter and not in Japan lol

Just ended up sending to a friend ๐Ÿ˜‚
Itโ€™s super easy to send stuff to convenience stores as pickup locations. Just did it in Kyoto.
biggihs 2mo
I did that too, super nice.
andrew9 2mo
Any recommendations of a nice but also budget capsule hotel in Osaka?
atticus 2mo
How are you navigating around Japan, are you learning Japanese with any apps or tools?
eric124 2mo
Navigate: just use Google maps.

Google Lens is good too translate writings.

A bit of Japanese ofc helps.
brendanb 2mo
Definitely watch a few videos explaining the metro system. Will save you a shitload of confusion and time.
Hi! I'm getting ready for a 6 March arrival in Japan. I'll be starting off with 41 days in Osaka. Will anyone be in Osaka/Kyoto from 6 March - 16 April? It's my first time in Asia and I'd love to meet other nomads for coffee or lunch.
Google maps works well most of the citis and towns in Japan. Only when you are around very remote area, you may not be able to get the latest info of transportation etc.. And most of the foreignes can survive with translation apps for restaurants and day to day life here in Osaka.
katharine 2mo
Anyone in Sapporo rn?
Anyone up for / planning to ski in Hakkuba this month? I'll be there 21st - 27th if anyone's up for meeting up there
noellang 2mo
does anyone know of a good podcast and/or video studio in tokyo i could rent out for a day? thanks! :)
Is anyone in Fukuoka currently?
Or Hiroshima
Osaka, but in Hiroshima from 27th
ania 2mo
Hi all, anyone happens to be in Niseko in the first week of March? My friend and I plan to combine skiing with working from there so we are happy to team up :)
Arriving tomorrow in Osaka for several days is there anyone there?)
danactive 2mo
hklzlfgdcttq I'm still here in Osaka
Whats your plans? Iโ€™m planing to explore city and visit some places.
danactive 2mo
I came back from some tourism so the next period will be causual work
davorb 2mo
It works reasonably well for metro stuff. But it sometimes doesn't see some trains like Shinkansen. Always better to check official sights if you are planning on travelling far.
biggihs 2mo
Im in Tokyo for a couple of days if anyone is in the area and wants to meetup for a chat, coffee or beer.
biggihs 2mo
Then I'm off in a van for some weeks around Hakuba/shigakogen/NosawaOnsen working remote and skiing. If anybody is in that area and wants to meetup ๐Ÿ˜†
vinnie 2mo
Iโ€™m in Osaka for the next month, if anyone is keen to meetup let me know ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿป
Running a few min late to the thing tonight at Commissary (assuming I got the time zone and such right)
Super cool ! Did you drop a beginners tutorial for people that just want to start the digital nomad but are a bit lost ?
regiani 2mo
Is now a good time to spend 2-4 weeks in Japan? (First time). I heard of overtourism recently, makes me worry
brendanb 2mo
Itโ€™s probably too cold right now. Look up when the cherry blossoms are set to bloom and go then. It will be overtouristed but itโ€™s so nice that itโ€™s worth it.
brendanb 2mo
They should bloom in the next few weeks or month. There are websites that track it
Anyone in Japan Tokyo attending the crypto fin tech conference? I'll be there from tomorrow. Would be nice to meet a fellow nomad โ˜บ๏ธ
andrew9 2mo
its a bit chilly right now but not so bad, shouldnโ€™t be a deal breaker by any means
nthnjns 2mo
Over-tourism is 100 percent dependent on where you are. I just spent 6 months in Japan (over the past 8) and barely saw tourists. As long as you avoid certain neighborhoods in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka, etc, you'll barely see them outside of the train stations and airports. Sure, if you chill in Namba, Shibuya, Naoshima, Miyajima, or Central Kyoto, they are everywhere...but outside of that it is quite empty. It's a big country.
noellang 2mo
is anyone in tokyo currently and wants to grab some drinks?
Hi everyone, I visit Tokyo for 3 weeks this month. Does anyone have good recommendations for places to visit? A food tour and a few art installations are i the my list so far

Anyone going to the World Expo in April?
biggihs 1mo
I'm coming back to Tokyou from Hakuba. Will be there for the week. if you are still here I'd be up for a meetup. ๐Ÿ™‚

I know there is an "art island" somewhere that's supposed to be impressive.
nthnjns 1mo
Naoshima (touristy but ok) and Teshima (has one great museum). Both are nice if you can avoid the crowds.
andrew9 1mo
Iโ€™d like to take say 2 weeks to do a solo nature-retreat somewhere in Japan (ideally south), does anybody have recommendations? Iโ€™m thinking like renting a small room in a rural place near a forest / nature, to be offline for a while. Not thinking expensive yoga retreats etc. Thanks for any ideas
biggihs 1mo
I really liked Unzen-Amakusa National Park, Aso-Kuju National Park and Kirishima Kinkowan National Park. Mnt Aso really reminded me of back home. When I went, I did it by bus/train, for a 2 week off-grid travel I'd probably do all three in a van. Have fun.
nthnjns 1mo
Check the mount Aso area...accessible by one (really cool) sightseeing train from Kumamoto

Hey everyone, I am planning to stay 6 months in Toyko from July to December this year.

So my question is, how is the nomad community in Tokyo?

My last place was Gran Canaria and I have to say the nomad community there is just fantastic. Dozens of groups for all kinds of activities, social events every day etc.

I am asking because I heard that its easy to get lonely in Tokyo as Nomad and a vibrant community would be really important for me ;)
danactive 1mo
vpyskdafk I'm hoping to go if I can stay in Japan for another month. I already checked out the new (Expo) transit station

thanks for the recommendations!

Hey nomads! Does anyone work from Shibaya or any other central district tomorrow? I would love to grab a coffee and chat
Any good cafes in Osaka to get some work done? Not there myself right now, asking for my brother.
biggihs 29d
What did you decide to to? ๐Ÿ™‚
biggihs 29d
I just got back to Tokyo for a couple of weeks if anyone wants to meetup for coffee or something. ๐Ÿ™‚
biggihs 29d
Hello fellow kids! I would love to hear where you guys are based at and what your day-to-day looks like. And how you spend your time outside of work. I came here end of Feb to stay with friends near Hakuba. Originally just for a month, to work remotely, ski a bit, and join a telemark event. Now weโ€™re doing a ski-making course on weekends until April but the weekdays I've been mostly in Tokyo eating ramen bowls during the day and working in the afternoons (I work on uk time).
Hi Guys,
I am planning a trip to Japan in june and would like some recommendations of places.

The suggestions i see online feel regular or more like default. I am looking for unique or hidden places.
I like cars, techno msic, clubs and bars and food. Also an anime fan.

Any advice or suggesttions, i would appreciate.

Its my first time going there or traveling.
Would also love to meet people who can speak english and show me around
wingbeats 25d
My spouse taught English in Japan for years, and travelled around a bunch. Their absolute favorite place was Gujo Hachiman, in Gifu prefecture (Gifu was their favorite region. I've only been to tokyo region and kyoto myself).

It's a small mountain town with a river running through it, mostly populated by young folks who left, got an education, and chose to come back because they love their home. Spouse hung out often in a coffee shop run by a pro snowboarder who spoke english. Many of said young folks speak english pretty alright, but it's definitely a less "typical" touristy area. There's beautiful shrines and a castle, too, and creeks with fish alongside cobblestone roads.

That said, many japanese tourists visit in a specific week for the annual dance festival that lasts all night long, lol. (Mid July) My introverted spouse avoided that part, it does get crowded then.

Returning to Gujo Hachiman is currently at the top of the list for honeymoon adventure ideas. Main downside is one might have to take a bus to get there, I don't think a trainline goes there yet. (But that helps keep it off the radar a bit, probably)
wingbeats 25d
But for more nightclubs, manga and anime cafes, and such, it's reaaaally hard to be bored in Tokyo. Just depends on if you want more slice of life versus the classic nerd prefectures
wingbeats 25d
Sorry to reply again, but I remembered some other ideas from my own travels in tokyo. I'm probably about to expose myself as a bit of a weeb, but if there is a particular anime or video game you really like, chances are there is a museum/store/studio visit/popup cafe specifically for it, so go ahead and get really specific in your google searching. For instance, I went to the x-japan museum as a fan of jrock, went to the shonen jump museum in j-world, enjoyed a beautiful ghibli cafe in kyoto, and got excited to see the TV station featured heavily in Digimon, which I watched as a little kid.

Also, thrift stores and flea markets for secondhand anime merch in Japan are the best. Scored a lot of delightful schwag from favorite series for very cheap, and it was fun to browse. They're found all over the place in any city.
I would love a place like that. I dont want to visit the typical tourist places.I feel they will be packed. Gujo sounds like a place i would like to go and relax. Knowing that they also speak english pretty good is very encouraging.

Thinking of renting a car for out of town trips but using a bus is also a good idea.

Thank you so much
I actually want both so will do a mix of it all
I am definitely gonna do any museum final fantasy, AOT, solo leveling related at the very least
Going with a carry on backpack and coming back with a sack of merch ๐Ÿ˜€
jasiek 22d
Good people, help me out here. We're thinking of going to Japan with our kids and are looking for some kind of school/camp options for them during the day. Does anyone have any experience in this area?
allgo 19d
This Kurzgesagt video says Japan has 10 million unoccupied houses in rural areas!
brendanb 19d
Yes but theyโ€™re falling apart arenโ€™t they? You can buy some of them for a $1. Thereโ€™s been a few foreigners whoโ€™ve done it and filmed the process
wingbeats 18d
Yeah it's pretty much buying the land and likely tearing down and rebuilding. Which...if one can afford that, it's pretty tempting if one wants some quiet japanese village life
wingbeats 18d
Given how expensive land alone is where I am, I do daydream about it sometimes ๐Ÿ˜‚
jasiek 18d
I think the houses need to be rebuilt every 15 years and this fact makes Japan the only country in the world where real estate loses value.
leliel 14d
Hello, what s the city in Japan with the best quality price to visit for 2 weeks?
Just stayed in a pretty amazing hidden gem in Shizuoka. Ideal for nomads who want a traditional but luxurious hotel in a remote nature feeling, with arts and crafts to explore.

Izumigaya Craft Inn Waraku and it's restored village area.
nthnjns 14d
Depends on time of year and what you are interested in, but Kanazawa, Fukuoka, Kumamoto, Naha, and Osaka/Nara are all good values (compared to Tokyo/Kyoto). From each of these cities you can take lots of easy day trips to nature/hiking/temples or other cities. All have a good amount of accomodation options. All have great food. Aside from certain neighborhoods in Osaka and the immediate Deer Park area in Nara, all are a bit less touristy than Kyoto/Tokyo.
Hi there
Been hearing that traveling to japan isnโ€™t a good idea in June but not getting a solid reason. Any idea why June isnโ€™t a good month and who has been there in june?
wingbeats 13d
I was in (mostly) Tokyo through the whole of summer (June-August) and it's just very hot and humid, unless you go to a high altitude in northern Japan. Air conditioning is expensive there and can be uncommon. Be prepared to wear lots of light linens and sweat a whole lot. I spent a lot of time at various beaches. The upside is summer fireworks festivals are everywhere, and that's fun. Just sweaty.

Also, minor risk of typhoons, I suppose.
nthnjns 13d
It's rainy, humid, and hot. If you can handle Thailand on a typical day it's fine but a lot of foreign tourists are shocked. FWIW both Sapporo and Fukuoka have very large, air conditioned, underground shopping areas that mitigate this a bit. Tokyo too, obviously.
Iโ€™m coming from a place with 29C on the lowest and 78% humidity
So i guess weather there would be better
Yeah i can handle Thailand
Awesome
Thanks a lot
mike01 13d
I agree, just spend a month at Futrworks coworking, it is the best coworking I've been in in my life. And it was totally free to use for me. Should check it out if you are in Osaka
wingbeats 13d
Yeah, I didn't mind Japan in the summer myself - I just feel like a lot of foreigners expect California and get surprised that Tokyo is very firmly subtropical ๐Ÿ˜
nthnjns 12d
Korea and Japan have swampy summers. Not my thing at all but some people like it.
slaster 8d
Anyone in Tokyo want to meet up or cowork next Tuesday or Wednesday?
minroz 7d
Temperature and UV, we experienced mostly 45c ++ and UV index upwards of 13

Considering Iโ€™m from Norway and Iโ€™m used the cold, just staying functional in that climate was challenging
pravin 5d
Interesting and Curious why was the coworking free for you
nthnjns 5d
Last year was crazy. The hot weather started in May and lasted until the beginning of November. Osaka was still regularly 33C during the first two weeks in Nov with zero clouds so the sun was extra brutal.
minroz 3d
wow, i flew back in September
Would have expected Nov to be a bit more comfortable
nthnjns 2d
Osaka is a heat sink. There was some ball of super hot water off the coast last year that created abnormally hot temps well into early Nov. And the air is clean so the sun is even more intense.

Yeah, depends on what kind of experience you want. Do you like mountains or beaches? Nightclubs or peace and quiet? Want to experience traditional culture or prefer ultra modern vibes?
