Are there banks in russia that allow for low deposit remote opening?? I haven't had much of a chance to read the chat much
zlat 2mo
This summer I‘ll go to Moscow. On the Ozon website, I noticed that Lindt chocolate are in high demand. So, I will bring a few chocolates and sell them for a profit. It‘s not gonna make me rich, but it would hopefully help me earn enough for 5–10 espressos. 😊 What other sanctioned goods do you think Russian need, so I can bring in?
zlat 2mo
I‘ll definitely need help with this once I reach Moscow. Last time I was changing VPNs constantly because they were all stopping to work after a while. I need a stable long-term solution so I can work with western clients while I‘m in Russia. If I can keep your contact, I‘m willing to pay just to it right as I‘m not a developer.
Sure man. I've been out of Moscow for some time already, so I don't know if it will still be working, but just let me know and we can test it
zlat 2mo
Hope so. Things keep changing. Last time, I was suggested 3 VPNs, but once I cross the border, those VPNs got sanctioned. 😊 So I thought setting one‘s own server for VPN is a unsanctionable solution.

By the way, has anyone considered transferring gold in Russia? It might be a viable wealth transfer option instead of going with crypto or cash. 😊
Sounds heavy.
zlat 2mo
With the current price of gold, even exchanging a 100g bar for roubles would be just enough to survive 3 months in Moscow.
zlat 2mo
And with the proper documentation that comes with transferring gold, I hope it‘s doable.

Ooh as a 🇬🇧 and 🇷🇺 citizen I’d love to know! My grandparent are still in 🇷🇺 and I’ve never had a good experience in Moscow … so to that American please tell me how they treat you when you go 🙏

ruugcetl kdrszcwxvqbbzzck if you still have some questions, I may be able to help you out - living in Moscow for the last few years. VPNs - they also block personal servers, to be precise - they block lots of popular datacenters like Hetzner and OVH. I ended up paying a tiny monthly subscription to AmneziaVPN - its specifically focused for Russians and they keep updating servers often.
stinkyfax 2mo
crypto is much safer. I'd be personally concerned declaring gold in the airport
zlat 2mo
AmneziaVPN… noted. Thanks Evgen. 🙏 For now, I have no concrete plan when will I move to Moscow. But I suspect it might happen by end of 2026, considering the global events.

Yeah, VPNs are a pesky problem for me, which is why I don‘t plan to rely on my IT career freelancing for Western clients while in Russia. That‘s why I‘m completing my Yumeiho massage course, so I could have a plan B and begin my massage studio, so neither internet, nor AI, nor any sanction catches me. 😊
zlat 2mo
Yeah, but crypto is illegal in Russia, no? Because if I end up buying a flat, how would I declare the origin of my money? This is what troubles me.

By the way, this is a hypothetical talk. I‘m talking about a 100g gold. But I‘d like to think that I‘ll find a way to save enough for a flat in Moscow. by 2027. 😊
stinkyfax 2mo
Nah, don’t worry about it. It’s an extra burden but not a deal breaker to be unable to work. I work fine, as many others. Business as usual, just with extra (sometimes frustrating) steps.

this country is very difficult to follow the law, you can start getting used to it now.
my personal experience, i've bought lots of stock and expensive cars, when stock broker & car dealer ask me to fill papers on where the money come I tick "other" box.
since you're not a tax resident, they cannot and are not intersted in investigating your taxes

nobody asked me "how you transferred your wealth from europe to russia". Not even sure if they are legally obliged to know, what's the difference?
Maybe tax man will ask you proof of income in your other country to confirm you indeed had these money not stolen, but this is again not about how you transfer money.
stinkyfax 2mo
Why I'm against gold - the country is safe, but it is not stupid-proof. Information travels fast here, private information gets sold all around. By simply providing a russian chat bot a phone number or a full name, it'll give you all the personal details: full home address, cars owned, bank deposits owned. The privace here is non existent. Even when you arrive, the border control will ask you to give them a full access to your phone, they'll go into your Telegram and start reading private messages between you and your wife (happened to me 2 weeks ago after a Dubai trip).
So.. imagine in a safe country some people know you're carrying $400k worth of gold. Even with low crime, you're asking for trouble, both legal (the gov will look for all opportunities to extract it) and illegal. I'd rather not.
stinkyfax 2mo
In any case, buying a property - you most likely want to consult a lawyer, a property broker, and locals - this is a serious purchase not to be taken lightly.
I've grown my Russian inner circle pretty big - my wife is Russian, most of my friends are here, and I also established a russian Ltd company in 2020 to reduce my consulting taxes.. , so if you need help there - let me know.
zlat 2mo
Thanks a lot Evgen. My wife is Russian too. I‘m saving your contact, just in case.

Recommend me companies who transfer money from American cards to Russians and vice versa please 🙏
I can do it
What VPN works in Russia nowadays?
Red shield, ≈900 rub per month

Is there any way to get a local sim card nowadays in russia as a tourist? I plan to use an ESIM, but I know to authorize payments on your credit card you need a local number (at least with Sberbank)
kateshar 14d
Vanya VPN
kateshar 14d
It is a very complicated prosess I would say… The easiest one is to find a Russian person who can give you a physical local SIM card that is registered on that persons name.
kateshar 14d
Apply for Tinkoff bank account. They do open bank accounts for tourists and then they can also come to your apartment and give you a SIM card but they will take your biometric data (voice and photo) to open SIM card on your name 🫣
pablos 4d
Thank you for this information! Very valuable.
When I registered for tinkoff, I'm pretty sure I needed a local phone number during the in app sign up process.

It was good service though, a day later they delivered my bank card and verifies my passport and tourist visa. Depositing USD or EUR into ATM to top up RUB balance for local spending.

So I ended up using the sim card provided by my friend for the entire 3 months.
You might be right. Maybe it did need the phone number to apply for Tinkoff account and phone number. 🫣 Maybe I gave my number for the application process. It is sooo complicated now in Russia. It is like catch-22 in Russia now with phone numbers.
It is considered illegal now and that person might get in trouble so be careful doing that
