is VPN a big issue in russia? can u get in trouble with the authorities for using it?
maria4fun 2mo
You can use. But you cannot say publicly โ€œuse vpnโ€ or โ€œuse this kind of vpnโ€
are there problems getting a good vpn?
maria4fun 2mo
Good question :)
Dm you
lexalexa 2mo
They are frequently blocked so mix and match
So if you have one that gets disconnected you fucked cuz you canโ€™t install another? - you always have to have 2?
lexalexa 2mo
Something around those lines
Which brands are the best? Does Tor work?
lexalexa 2mo

Hey there! Any activity in Moscow? I think I can make a recurrent meetup in Moscow for visitors of nomads.com. If youโ€™re interested, react to this message, reply or DM - so that I understand what the audience is.
Moved to SPB in Sept. English speaking but learning RU. Would love to find some โ€˜cafe friendsโ€™ to help improve my language.
Board games, auto sports, ice skating, sauna are some of my interests if that helps.
mikeneves 2mo
Are you learning RU by yourself or do you have a teacher in SPB?
ะกะฐะผ. Using DuoLingo ๐Ÿซค
mikeneves 2mo
Ah ok, well I tried that approach and it didnโ€™t work for me ๐Ÿ˜…

Are there banks in russia that allow for low deposit remote opening?? I haven't had much of a chance to read the chat much

This summer Iโ€˜ll go to Moscow. On the Ozon website, I noticed that Lindt chocolate are in high demand. So, I will bring a few chocolates and sell them for a profit. Itโ€˜s not gonna make me rich, but it would hopefully help me earn enough for 5โ€“10 espressos. ๐Ÿ˜Š What other sanctioned goods do you think Russian need, so I can bring in?
zlat 24d
Iโ€˜ll definitely need help with this once I reach Moscow. Last time I was changing VPNs constantly because they were all stopping to work after a while. I need a stable long-term solution so I can work with western clients while Iโ€˜m in Russia. If I can keep your contact, Iโ€˜m willing to pay just to it right as Iโ€˜m not a developer.
Sure man. I've been out of Moscow for some time already, so I don't know if it will still be working, but just let me know and we can test it
zlat 24d
Hope so. Things keep changing. Last time, I was suggested 3 VPNs, but once I cross the border, those VPNs got sanctioned. ๐Ÿ˜Š So I thought setting oneโ€˜s own server for VPN is a unsanctionable solution.

By the way, has anyone considered transferring gold in Russia? It might be a viable wealth transfer option instead of going with crypto or cash. ๐Ÿ˜Š
Sounds heavy.
zlat 23d
With the current price of gold, even exchanging a 100g bar for roubles would be just enough to survive 3 months in Moscow.
zlat 23d
And with the proper documentation that comes with transferring gold, I hope itโ€˜s doable.

Ooh as a ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง and ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ citizen Iโ€™d love to know! My grandparent are still in ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ and Iโ€™ve never had a good experience in Moscow โ€ฆ so to that American please tell me how they treat you when you go ๐Ÿ™

ncfvlzey ricnlmkcapsjyavm if you still have some questions, I may be able to help you out - living in Moscow for the last few years. VPNs - they also block personal servers, to be precise - they block lots of popular datacenters like Hetzner and OVH. I ended up paying a tiny monthly subscription to AmneziaVPN - its specifically focused for Russians and they keep updating servers often.
stinkyfax 12d
crypto is much safer. I'd be personally concerned declaring gold in the airport
zlat 12d
AmneziaVPNโ€ฆ noted. Thanks Evgen. ๐Ÿ™ For now, I have no concrete plan when will I move to Moscow. But I suspect it might happen by end of 2026, considering the global events.

Yeah, VPNs are a pesky problem for me, which is why I donโ€˜t plan to rely on my IT career freelancing for Western clients while in Russia. Thatโ€˜s why Iโ€˜m completing my Yumeiho massage course, so I could have a plan B and begin my massage studio, so neither internet, nor AI, nor any sanction catches me. ๐Ÿ˜Š
zlat 12d
Yeah, but crypto is illegal in Russia, no? Because if I end up buying a flat, how would I declare the origin of my money? This is what troubles me.

By the way, this is a hypothetical talk. Iโ€˜m talking about a 100g gold. But Iโ€˜d like to think that Iโ€˜ll find a way to save enough for a flat in Moscow. by 2027. ๐Ÿ˜Š
stinkyfax 12d
Nah, donโ€™t worry about it. Itโ€™s an extra burden but not a deal breaker to be unable to work. I work fine, as many others. Business as usual, just with extra (sometimes frustrating) steps.
stinkyfax 12d
this country is very difficult to follow the law, you can start getting used to it now.
my personal experience, i've bought lots of stock and expensive cars, when stock broker & car dealer ask me to fill papers on where the money come I tick "other" box.
since you're not a tax resident, they cannot and are not intersted in investigating your taxes

nobody asked me "how you transferred your wealth from europe to russia". Not even sure if they are legally obliged to know, what's the difference?
Maybe tax man will ask you proof of income in your other country to confirm you indeed had these money not stolen, but this is again not about how you transfer money.
stinkyfax 12d
Why I'm against gold - the country is safe, but it is not stupid-proof. Information travels fast here, private information gets sold all around. By simply providing a russian chat bot a phone number or a full name, it'll give you all the personal details: full home address, cars owned, bank deposits owned. The privace here is non existent. Even when you arrive, the border control will ask you to give them a full access to your phone, they'll go into your Telegram and start reading private messages between you and your wife (happened to me 2 weeks ago after a Dubai trip).
So.. imagine in a safe country some people know you're carrying $400k worth of gold. Even with low crime, you're asking for trouble, both legal (the gov will look for all opportunities to extract it) and illegal. I'd rather not.
stinkyfax 12d
In any case, buying a property - you most likely want to consult a lawyer, a property broker, and locals - this is a serious purchase not to be taken lightly.
I've grown my Russian inner circle pretty big - my wife is Russian, most of my friends are here, and I also established a russian Ltd company in 2020 to reduce my consulting taxes.. , so if you need help there - let me know.
zlat 12d
Thanks a lot Evgen. My wife is Russian too. Iโ€˜m saving your contact, just in case.
